millbank Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Gov. George E. Pataki will propose today, as part of his $100 billion-plus state budget plan, a new research institute at Buffalo's Center of Excellence, named for the late son of Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, to attract scientists to study certain childhood diseases. The Hunter James Kelly Institute, with $7 million in initial state seed money, in the next couple of years will be home to 12 scientists with separate research teams at the University at Buffalo's Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences studying diseases such as those that took the life of 8-year-old Hunter last August, aides to the governor said Monday. The plan calls for $6 million in state money this year to help with equipment purchases and other costs and another $1 million for salaries at the research institute at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. The institute was given an initial $1 million endowment from Hunter's Hope Foundation, run by Jim Kelly, UB officials said. "It shows we're not doing it alone," Kelly said of the state funding.
