Blue Chipper Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Pitt selects Ben and we select JP. Season one Ben learns on the job and gains the confidence of his veteran team by winning a number of games in a row. JP is hit by Vincent in practice and misses the season or most of it. Season two Ben is hurt at times but come the playoffs leads his team into Indi and upsets them and again has his team knocking on the door for a superbowl visit. JP is benched in favor of a 10 yr jouneyman qb and misses the final few games of the season gaining no experience what so ever. Wow. Two QB's both drafted in round 1 and their careers couldnt be more different. Just like the teams they play for. They have a coach who lasted longer than their gm (TD). We have since fired that same gm and have gone through two coaches. Our organizations are the complete opposite.
Corp000085 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 there's no comparison... pittsburgh's got a good oragnization, ours has been in shambles... the more accurate comparison would be jp vs. cade mcnown.
zow2 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 There's no comparison because Ben is flat out much better than JP. He's more accurate and has better touch, he has more awareness in the pocket, he can read a defense better from day 1 and he makes the Pittsburgh offense much better. The coaching staff of Pittsburgh did not make Ben this good, he showed up as the best QB in that draft like some of said a year prior to that draft.

Put JP in there and he would excel.

Got a feeling that Donohoe wishes that Houston would have made that trade.
colin Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 pit also dumbed down the passing game for ben his first year. we have had a dumb ass bunch of HORRIBLE offensive coached who have had zero sucess but still think they have to throw the kitchen sink at every game.
J Dengler Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 did any of you see the espn show, a year and a half ago, that followed the rokies througt the combine and stuff. they followed jp, and he was calling out rivers and ben, insinuating that they were wimps for not doing all the drills. looks sort of silly now
MartyBall4Buffalo Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Ben Roethlisberger was nfl ready from day 1. Yes he inherited a good supporting cast but it goes way beyond that. He can read a field better. Ben has better accuracy especially on the intermediate and short routes. Their deep passes are pretty even. Ben has better touch. Ben has much better pocket awarness. Where as Losman has happy feet. Roethlisberger can take a step up, move to the left or right, and still manage to find his receiver. Losman has the phsyical tools to be as productive as roethlisberger. I wont say as good, cause they're different style qb's, but Losman's mechanics are still raw, his accuracy and pocket awarness are still shotty, and he has to learn the meaning of the word "touch pass". When he manages to work on improving in those areas he'll learn to become a better qb.

"He came from the MAC, too Raw, poor mechanics, etc." All I knew is that I watched the dude week after week for a couple years and there was no doubt in my mind that he was going to be a great NFL QB. As much as I hate it, I think the Steelers win it all this year. Also, some of his success can be attributed to the situation he came into but the guy simply makes plays. If he doesn't tackle Harper, that fumble goes for 6.

Jut look at the Colts win today; Ben R carried the team, the running game and o-line didn't. Sure, it helps to have a line and a running game; but Ben R is a franchise QB, he's not some caretaker, Trent Dilfer type. What makes Ben R so great--and other franchise QB's too--is the ability to make big plays in the redzone. Today, if the Bills would have been out there with either JP or KH, it would have been a 6-0 lead. Ben R made laser throws to Randel El and Miller in the endzone for a 14-0 lead. That is talent, smarts, and a knack for big plays under pressure. He's just a great QB. We can only hope that JP develops into something half as good in the next year or so.

As for Ben "reading the defense better from day 1" you should go find some quotes from Ben about last season where he basically says he had one option on the majority of pass plays. Ben has a much better organization around him, one that puts him in a position to succeed.
PromoTheRobot Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Did you watch Peyton Manning today running for his life? That's what Peyton Manning would look like every game if he played for the Bills. Sometimes even the great ones can look like crap without blocking. Until the Bills get a line, no assessment of any QB is valid. PTR
crackur Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 I honestly dont think big ben is "great".........I wanted the bills to draft him.......and I also liked Rivers.......but look at that OLINE and the RBS they got on that team and having a good D .....isn't a bad thing......

I could imagine if the Bills had traded up and gotten Big Ben before the Steelers and then Pittsburgh ended up drafting JP, we might be seeing the exact opposite posts today with regard to the QB situation. People would be complaining about Donahoe passing up a chance at JP for Big Ben. Without an offensive line, it doesn't matter who our QB is.
