January Movies: Underworld:Evolution

As the great lion and the giant ape battle each other for top holiday movie honors, we now move on to the month of January. All kids are back in school, the big businesses are slowing down their production, and the big movie studios release the worst movies they can possibly throw out, so that no one will even remember that they came out this year.

Traditionally January is a time when moviegoers will catch up on the possible Oscar contenders that will expand in the weeks to come. While those movies get the glory, the remaining movies that actually open this month are quietly released and quickly forgotten. But there will still be an audience for those not interested in artsy independent films, or heavy drama downers. So here is a look at what January has in store for us.

Kate Beckinsale is back as the sexy vampire Selene, in "Underworld: Evolution". This follow-up to the 2003 movie "Underworld", reveals more about the origins of the warring vampire & werewolf clans. While there has not been much clamor for this film, there is always an audience for vampire movies, good or bad.

Which brings us to another vampire flick, "Bloodrayne". Starring Kristanna Loken, Ben Kingsley, and everyone's favorite "Lost" actress Michelle Rodriguez. Loken is a half-human-half vampire attempting to prevent a vampire lord from completing a doomsday prophecy.

For those not interested in vampires and wanting their horror more direct and more graphic, they have an alternative with "Hostel". This film follows 3 backpackers who travel to a Slovakian city to have their most depraved fantasies come true. Early buzz has this movie as being very disturbing, and very sick.

Looking for feel good fare? Look no further than the underdog movie "Glory Road".

Josh Lucas plays real life coach Don Haskins, who led his all black starting college basketball team to the 1966 NCAA Championship.

Good news for Martin Lawrence fans. He's back with a new movie. The bad news is, it's "Big Momma's House 2".

James Franco attempts to flex his starpower with 2 movies this month. First the romantic medieval times movie "Tristan & Isolde". He's an English knight, and Sophia Myles is the daughter of the King of Ireland. Uh-oh.

Second, is the life in the military movie, "Annapolis". Here Franco's character tries to make it to the top at the Naval Academy.

Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, & Angela Lansbury star in "Nanny McPhee". A family film in which Thompson plays the titular character who is called upon to take charge of the 7 bad mannered Brown children.

From the comedies that will make you groan department, there is "Last Holiday" from Paramount, starring Quenn Latifah. While 20th Century Fox unleashes "Grandma's Boy", starring absolutely no one. These 2 movies look so bad, that you must see the trailers to see how bad they are.

On that note, here's the calendar with trailers. Enjoy, if you can.

I know a movie is going to be bad when it's a sequel and I never even heard that it was in production/filming.

Nanny McPhee was released over here before Xmas... My Wife went to see it - she's a primary school teacher and she said it was a great film for small kids with enough heartwarming guff for chicks to like it too... Not one for the guys (unless you taking the little kids) but apparantly decent enough...
