Pete Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 I keep reading how Mike is a bust, we blew that pick and we need to fix the offensive line. In hindsight who would you select? I am not a fan of Mckinnie- you can watch his stuff tonight. Ryan Sims was the guy I was campaigning for at the time of the draft and he has been solid. Roy Williams would be tremendous for us. Levi Jones or Dwight Freeney would be great. I like the Josh Reed pick in the second round but would of liked to have selected Lecharles Bentley in hindsight. Anyways I cannot fault the Mike Williams and Josh Reed picks at the time and I am not writing either off. A good QB would do wonders for both of them- 4 4 Buffalo Bills Mike Williams OT Texas 5 5 San Diego Chargers Quentin Jammer CB Texas 6 6 Kansas City Chiefs (from Dallas) Ryan Sims DT North Carolina 7 7 Minnesota Vikings Bryant McKinnie OT Miami (FL) 8 8 Dallas Cowboys (from Kansas City) Roy Williams S Oklahoma 9 9 Jacksonville Jaguars John Henderson DT Tennessee 10 10 Cincinnati Bengals Levi Jones OT Arizona St. 11 11 Indianapolis Colts Dwight Freeney OLB Syracuse 12 12 Arizona Cardinals Wendell Bryant DT Wisconsin 13 13 New Orleans Saints Donte Stallworth WR Tennessee 14 14 New York Giants (from Tennessee) Jeremy Shockey TE Miami (FL) 15 15 Tennessee Titans (from New York Giants) Albert Haynesworth DT Tennessee 16 16 Cleveland Browns William Green HB Boston College 17 17 Oakland Raiders (from Atlanta) Phillip Buchanon CB Miami (FL) 18 18 Atlanta Falcons (from Oakland) T.J. MattyT Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Freeney and Roy Williams stand out in my mind.
Pete Posted September 21, 2004 Author Posted September 21, 2004 I agree but neither helps our offense or oline. Thats why you never draft for need you always select the best value on the board IMO
nodnarb Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 no way in hell. dwight freeney, john henderson, or roy williams. hell, even ed reed or albert haynesworth. Mike Williams is a 2nd round guard. He doesn't have the feet to be a great RT, and you need your #4 overall picks to be GREAT, or you've failed in the selection. Mike's a good kid. He'll never be GREAT.
Astrobot Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Agreed. Let's watch McKinnie tonight and see if he'd be doing any better than our 4th-pick future guard.
silvermike Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Trade down, no question. I think that's usually the way to go, too. My best guess is that the Bengals would have given something to move down (to take the top tackle instead of the third), say, a second rounder. Then the Bills snag Freeney at 10, and trade the #4 in the second round to the Patriots for Bledsoe (I wouldn't do that now, of course, but I think it would have made sense then). With the Bengals pick, we take LeCharles Bentley. Then, in 2003, we still make the Price trade, and move up in the first round to take Byron Leftwich.
Pete Posted September 21, 2004 Author Posted September 21, 2004 Trading down was not an option. Donahue tried to trade down but there were no suitors. In todays game with the salary cap it is damn near impossible to trade out of a top 5 slot. Noone wants the cap ramifications and there are no sure things.
Albany,n.y. Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 This was my draft the 2 days back in 2002, some good some bad (Bills pick): 1) Bryant McKinnie OT (Mike Williams OT) 2) Anthony Weaver DT (Josh Reed WR/ Ryan Denney DE) 3) Saleem Rasheed LB (traded) 3) Kevin Curtis S (Coy Wire S) 4) Ron Johnson WR (traded) 5) Jeremy Allen FB (Justin Bannan DT) 6) Eric Heitman G (Kevin Thomas CB) 7) Akbar Gbaja-Biamila-DE-I later found out he returned to college after getting another year of eligibility (Mike Pucillo G) 7) Casey Roussel P (Rodney Wright WR) 7) Chad Hayes TE (Jarrett Ferguson RB) 7) Emmett Johnson WR (Dominique Stevenson LB) In addition I recommended getting Jason Ball C as a UFA, he's on SD started last 2 seasons, held out training camp this year. The only UFA still on the Bills that TD signed is Joe Burns
Kipers Hair Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Roy Williams in the 1st and Kendall Simmons on the 2nd...
BB2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 I think that's an easy one in my opinion. Bryant McKinnie would have been the option, although Roy Williams was talked about a lot.
The Jokeman Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 I keep reading how Mike is a bust, we blew that pick and we need to fix the offensive line. In hindsight who would you select? I responded to a post like this awhile ago. I stand by my thoughts then and now. I felt back in 2002 and now that McKinnie would have been the better pick. However in retrospect, one guy that I feel might have been worthy of our selection was DT John Henderson. As he might be as good if not better then Sam Adams is now. Of course it still give us a hole on the O-line unless we took someone like LeCharles Bentley with our 2nd Round pick to play C and could of let Teague play at LT. The question would remain if we would still trade up would we still take Denney or possibly a WR like A. Bryant, A. Randle El, D. Branch? Or possibly not traded up and end up with a WR Cliff Russell in Round 3 and a DE like Alex Brown in Round 4.
