Gavin in Va Beach Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 So if we can count Ozzie's work from way back when, then should we also take into account Donahoe's 5 division titles(more than Newsome's), all his playoff wins(more than Newsome has), multiple conferencechampionship games(more than Newsome's teams) and superbowl appearances(exactly as many as Newsome)?Or should we embrace Newsome's history while ignroing Donahoes, because maybe Newsome's recent failures haven't had teh same kind of emotional effect on us? I for one sure hope the Bills make a rash, emotional decision instead of taking everything into account. 550551 Donahoe's 5 division titles or Cowhers? Donahoe leaves and the Steelers keep winning. Donahoe get's a new job and hasn't won shiat. Whose 5 division titles?
Simon Posted January 3, 2006 Author Posted January 3, 2006 I have watched this team over the past 5 seasons basically tread water. So you think Ozzie Newsome should be fired too? his time here in Buffalo has not been as productive. We keep hearing how this is a business, right? Well, if that's the case, then he has to be held accountable for the failings of the team , being the man in charge and all. I don't have a problem with any of that. I'll only have a problem if the Bills fire him and then don't bring in somebody better; to me that's just foolish. I agree that changes really need to be made. But before I fire an historically succesful football guy, I'd sure be thinking about sending Gray and Clements packing because a) I think their work has been far worse than Donahoe's and b) finding an upgrade at those position is going to be a lot easier than finding a true upgrade at GM. Whose 5 division titles? 550646 The Stillers keep on winning with Donahoe's roster. A full 5 years later almost half their starters are still Donahoe guys, nobody in the NFL has had less turnover in that time and that's no accident. I think even Gregg WIlliams could have won with that roster. But you watch, the Stillers are already showing signs of cracking the further they get from the TD era. And it's only going to get worse as they continue to lose TD's players and struggle to replace them. Cya

Simon Posted January 3, 2006 Author Posted January 3, 2006 Simon, this forum is meant for enjoyment, not slicing and dicing... 550643 Hey, I'm enjoying myself! TD should have you with him when Ralph has his little meeting with TD. TD does not want me anywhere near him right now. I'd be chewing his ear about leting PhatPat walk, dealing a 1strounder for Bledsoe, and his long history of refusing to hire experienced succesful head coaches.
R. Rich Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 So you think Ozzie Newsome should be fired too? 550648 No. I try to judge each scenario individually as opposed to collectively. Ozzie has done an excellent job of keeping the Ravens stocked w/ talent. That might be Phil Savage's ability to find quality players anywhere and everywhere (guys like Ed Hartwell, Kelly Gregg, Edwin Muiatalo, Chester Taylor, etc.); that remains to be seen. Still, I think that in terms of not only handling the salary cap, but in terms of making solid personnel decisions (not perfect, as the Boller trade indicates, but hits more than he misses) and of finding good players that are right for his team, he's a very good GM. A lot of what I've seen in the past couple of years in Baltimore has been due not only to poor coaching (Billick's stubborn refusal to think outside the box in terms of his starting QB-he did it w/ Redman, Wright, and Grbac before Boller), but also injuries that depleted their once dominant defense and to the somtimes self-destructive behavior of the Ravens themselves. I don't have a problem with any of that. I'll only have a problem if the Bills fire him and then don't bring in somebody better; to me that's just foolish. If we bring in some spend-happy, clueless exec to take over, heads will roll. I'm hoping that the Bills do put a great deal of effort into replacing the GM and don't just look for a quick fix who falls into line w/ Ralph Wilson and wants to do everything "on the cheap". If that were to happen, we can't expect much to change on the field. Cya 550648 Not if I Cya first (haha!!)

I'm seeing a few similarities here. The biggest difference I see is that the Ravens don't have a direct emotional effect on us while the Bills do. As a result we're more eager to have guys walking the plank when it effects us directly. I just don't want to see a decision made based on emotion. Not if I Cya first (haha!!) Since I check in at 5'9", I have a feeling I'll be seeing you first.
R. Rich Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I'm seeing a few similarities here. 550713 Trust me, as a person who lives in the Baltimore area and is subject to the drama that is the Baltimore Ravens, it's not as similar as you'd like to think. They (Bills/Ravens) each are going through their own unique experience. Since I check in at 5'9", I have a feeling I'll be seeing you first. 550713 You're half a foot taller than my wife, and I can spot her.
erynthered Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Since I check in at 5'9", 550713 Damn, you're a midget like VABills. No wait, you may have a foot on him.
Rico Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Over the last 4 years, Newsome's teams have lost exactly one less game than Donahoe's teams.Over that span they haven't won a single playoff game. Since they finished 6-10 this year, I think the Ravens should send Newsome packing. He sucks and he's a failure. 550503 Meh.
