ganesh Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 From the "Truth & Rumors" section on CNN/SI page. Defensive tackle John Thornton wrote on his Web site, jt97.com, that he might be gone from the Bengals next season. The rumor around Paul Brown Stadium is the Bengals will seek to renegotiate a less costly deal. -- Cincinnati Enquirer
Billsjunkie Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 This is what kills us. The Bills can not settle for average players anymore. We need to draft and bring in some playmakers. Not average players and projects. Thorton is average at best. No better than Edwards.
ch19079 Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 no, only 1 season in the past 7 has he had more than 20 tackles. thats not a run stopping DT.

Mikie2times Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Draft Nata from UO with the first pick 517399 Come on Nemhoff, it's Ngata. Let's pick up the execution around here!
Simon Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 only 1 season in the past 7 has he had more than 20 tackles.thats not a run stopping DT. Statistics and DT's have next to nothing to do with each other. You could be one of hte most effective Tackles in the NFL and still hardly register anything on a stat sheet. The only way to judge a DT's game is by actually watching him play. If I watch the Bengals, it's usually to see their offense and I'm likely to flip to another game when their D comes on. For that reason I'd be curious what stuckincincy has to say about Thornton.

I've only caught a few Bengals games, but have seen enough to know they have a pretty awful run defense, not Buffalo bad, but bad by NFL standards. Who knows how much of a role Thornton plays in all of that, but it can’t be the greatest sign if they want him to restructure after signing not to long ago.
BB2004 Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Draft Nata from UO with the first pick 517399 Gabe Watson from the University of Michigan would be my choice.
Coach Tuesday Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Ironically, I believe the only reason the Bengals signed Thorton was because we out-bid them for Sam Adams...
stuckincincy Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 By all means, run up the middle against the Bengals. I'd give Thornton a solid "C minus". The other starting DT is Bryan Robinson via Chicago and Miami. Robinson was out last week and this with a bum foot or some such - a 2nd year player named Shaun Smith starts in place. 2004's 4th round DT draftee Matthew Askew has generally been injured and evidently doesn't show much in practice now that he's better. They're going to try another 4th rounder, OT Stacey Andrews at the DT spot in practice. Along with DE's Justin Smith and Robert Geathers, The DL generates a fair pass rush, but one seldom has the occasion to say ooh or aah. In game 2 and 3 CIN victories, both MIN and CHI were running well and for reasons unknown, both of those clubs decided to concentrate on passing with qb's who were obviously going nowhere. Both starting safeties are gone - Kim Herring before the season started, and Madieu Williams around game three - big loss there. The starting LB's Brian Simmons, Landon Johnson, and rookie Odell Thurmann are decent. Thurmann has made some spiffy plays, but "youthful enthusiam" finds him over-pursuing and getting had from time to time. MLB Nate Webster has returned from a year and a half of injury status, along with 2004's 3rd rounder MLB Caleb Miller. And DC Chuck Bresnahan has numerous flashes of "Grey's Disease".
ch19079 Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 didnt pat williams consistantly have 60+ tackes each season? how can a good, run stopping DT, not have more than 20 tackles a season. honestly... we need a beast. we need a john henderson type DT.
