How Are The Guards In 06?

After hearing Bill Parcells say that it is twice as hard to find an OG than a wide receiver, I looked into what happens on this position on draft day.

In summary, like any other position, many highly selected OGs play well, and there have been several busts. There have however been some literal steals.

For Example:

Will Shields was the 18th pick of Round 3 in 1993.

Larry Allen was the 17th pick of Round 2 in 1994.

Astonishingly, Larry Little was an undrafted free agent.

1973 was one great group:

John Hannah was the 4th pick of Round 1 (very high for a guard but one of the best)

Joe Delameilleure was the 26th pick of Round 1.

Leon Gray (who later moved to LT and was very good) was the 26th pick of Round 3.

Other good selections who performed to their early slot were:

Ruben Brown - 14th pick of Round 1 - 1995

Steve Hutchinson - 17th pick of Round 1 - 2001

Eric Steinbach - 1st pick of Round 2 - 2003

Anyway, do you draft gurus know of any OGs who you rate to be far ahead of the rest of the group in 06? I know there are other needs such as OT and DT, but the Bills are simply not strong at this position.

So, who are the good (great) ones and where should/will they be selected?

Thanks.

Ratings can vary wildly but Gilles of Georgia is everyones favorite Guard prospect. You can watch him this weekend.

Many OT's listed will slide inside upon reaching the NFL . The ability to chose from many quality OL prospects in the draft, plus bid on a couple FA Vets like Hutchinson and Bentley, makes this a great year to upgrade the OL.

It can be done but TD needs to sober up and be proactive. No more cheap castoffs.
