At least he had a few random neurons firing in the old cranium.

look what the cat dragged in...

What's your prescription for this patient Doc?

As posted in another thread -- the Bills are going nowhere until they, as an organization, figure out how to build an offensive and defensive line. As a hall of fame coach once said, "Football is a great sport. It rewards manhood." As another hall of famer put it, "It's simple: you have to be able to run and stop the run."

With sub-par crap in the trenches, the Bills are just another also-ran franchise.

So, do you think there is an actual prescription for that or is it just dumb luck that you hit on your drafts and your free agents? Or is it just the coaching and only a handful of guys know the secret?

Frankly, it appears to be systemic and not just the latest batch of coaches. Of course, Buffalo doesn't appear to be able to hire experience at the coaching position for whatever reasons, so it's hard to isolate the variables.

I think the Bills have one of the elite OL coaches. Perhaps his best years are in the rearview mirror, I don't know. But he at one time was widely considered to be the best OL coach around. But this line is simply an embarrassment. CV seems like a fairly solid LG, but the others just suck. At some point, one has to realize that the coaches don't play the games. They can draw up game plans, run drills, scream at players, etc. -- but if the player just throws it all out the window on Sunday afternoon and starts free lancing his craft, then the results are crippled QBs and RBs with crappy stat lines. You need a group of very smart, tough, strong, angry, mean bastards to work as an well-oiled instrument of destruction as an offensive line. Just because a guy is 6'10" and 400 lbs. and took ballet lessons in high school doesn't mean he's going to fit your system and fit in as part of the crew. Most of the Bills lineman have seemed to excel in the easy measurables - great benchpress and he weighs 380 lbs., sign him now! - but on the field this has translated into terrible units and sputtering offenses.

On defense, Donahoe has drafted a number of "high motor" DEs in past drafts. This would be fine except there is no true pass rushing threat on the roster. Bruce Smith will never be replaced, but there still are guys out there that can turn the corner in this league. It seems like the only effective pass rush the Bills have is a safety or corner blitz. That's just horrible. For so many reasons. I see a fair number of people blaming Jerry Gray for running all these blitzes - and at times it does seem ridiculous - but, this is also the NFL. If you sit back and give a QB over 10 seconds to stand in the pocket, he's going to methodically rip your defense a new one anyway. The only choice is whether to die slowly or quickly. :w00t:
