30dive Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 by Gordon Lightfoot The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead When the skies of November turn gloomy. With a load of iron ore - 26,000 tons more Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed When the gales of November came early The ship was the pride of the American side Coming back from some mill in Wisconson As the big freighters go it was bigger than most With a crew and the Captain well seasoned. Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms When they left fully loaded for Cleveland And later that night when the ships bell rang Could it be the North Wind they'd been feeling. The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound And a wave broke over the railing And every man knew, as the Captain did, too, T'was the witch of November come stealing. The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait When the gales of November came slashing When afternoon came it was freezing rain In the face of a hurricane West Wind When supper time came the old cook came on deck Saying fellows it's too rough to feed ya At 7PM a main hatchway caved in He said fellas it's been good to know ya. The Captain wired in he had water coming in And the good ship and crew was in peril And later that night when his lights went out of sight Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Does anyone know where the love of God goes When the words turn the minutes to hours The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay If they'd fifteen more miles behind her. They might have split up or they might have capsized They may have broke deep and took water And all that remains is the faces and the names Of the wives and the sons and the daughters. Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings In the ruins of her ice water mansion Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams, The islands and bays are for sportsmen. And farther below Lake Ontario Takes in what Lake Erie can send her And the iron boats go as the mariners all know With the gales of November remembered. In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral The church bell chimed, 'til it rang 29 times For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Ghost of BiB Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Does anyone know where the love of God goesWhen the waves turn the minutes to hours Great song. Lightfoot always was a good story teller.
ieatcrayonz Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Great song. Lightfoot always was a good story teller. 499276 I always thought he was good too. He has a right to his religion and all, but I think it was pretty sad when he became Yusef Islam. He hasn't had any good music since, and he is actually pretty militant.

ieatcrayonz Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Er, I think you're referring to Cat Stevens. 499445 I can see how you got confused there. It was definitely Lightfoot. Another one of his hits was "The Cat's in the Cradle" so I can see how you got the two singers confused.
30dive Posted November 10, 2005 Author Posted November 10, 2005 Er, I think you're referring to Cat Stevens. 499445 Cincy...You are correct.... ....that would be Cat Stevens! And yes his music was pretty darn good too!

ieatcrayonz Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Time in a Bottle by him was pretty awesome as well 499510 I agree it was a good song but it was not by Lightfoot or Stevens. It was by the Police. It wasn't their first hit, but it was their first big hit. "Send it on an SOS.......Send it on an SOS...."

stuckincincy Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Cincy...You are correct.... ....that would be Cat Stevens! And yes his music was pretty darn good too! 499506 I saw him at Kleinhans years ago. What a waste...drugged up, with all the stage presence of a cold plate of Retatta.
The Dean Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 ELAINE: Andrea Doria? Isn't that the one they did the song about? JERRY: (Correcting her) Edmund Fitzgerald. ELIANE: I love Edmund Fitzgerald's voice. JERRY: (Gives Elaine a look) No, Gordon Lightfoot was the singer. Edmund Fitzgerald was the ship. GEORGE: (Talking about his would-be apartment) You could fit 15 people in that bathroom.. ELAINE: I think Gordon Lightfoot was the boat. JERRY: (Sarcastic) Yeah, and it was rammed by the Cat Stevens.
ieatcrayonz Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Jim Croce. Have you taken ill today??? 499562 Um.......Jim Croce died. He is definitely not the Islamic one. What do you think, he's like Elvis or something?
30dive Posted November 10, 2005 Author Posted November 10, 2005 This thread has sunk to depths far deeper than the depth in which the 'ol Edmund rests.
plenzmd1 Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Um.......Jim Croce died. He is definitely not the Islamic one. What do you think, he's like Elvis or something? 499585 Oh, just figured we were talking about storytelling singers who have died tragic deaths
R. Rich Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Um.......Jim Croce died. He is definitely not the Islamic one. What do you think, he's like Elvis or something? 499585 Follow the timeline here... Time in a Bottle by him was pretty awesome as well 499510 Wasn't a Cat Stevens song, which prompted this post from you: I agree it was a good song but it was not by Lightfoot or Stevens. It was by the Police. It wasn't their first hit, but it was their first big hit. "Send it on an SOS.......Send it on an SOS...." 499524 Noble attempt, but also incorrect, which led to: Jim Croce. Have you taken ill today??? 499562 Croce did perform "Time In A Bottle" [bTW, The Police performed "Message In A Bottle"]
R. Rich Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Oh yeah, and Cat Stevens is the Islamic one. He goes by Yusef Salaam now, I believe.
