What movie did you think would be really crappy but actually turned out good?

I'd have to say "Alien vs. Predator".

I wouldn't have even watched it if HBO wasn't running it and I couldn't sleep, but when I did, WOW!

I expected a lame story and some good but predicatable action. The action was good and not totally predicatable, but the story was great. It went deeply into the culture of the Predators and gave a very plausible theory for the pyramids on Earth. It really made me think.

Check it out.

Ugh. Only the ending is watchable.

For me, it would be "Tremors". I rented it with a bunch of friends 15 years ago, after a wedding. It may well be the best "creature feature" ever made.

The acting is well done, especially Michael Gross and Reba McEntyre as the husband/wife gun nuts. I realized that Reba could more than hold her own in a movie.

The giant tunneling worms are original as far as monsters go. The whole movie is effective and even believable in a certain way. Very well done.

Not Another Teen Movie

I didn't expect this to be anything special but they really nailed all the stuff that makes teen movies unbearable.

The concept of the "pretty ugly girl" was well done. Basically the school nerd is this ugly girl who is ugly because she wears overalls, a hat, and glasses - and by dressing like a normal teenage girl and leaving the glasses off, she's suddenly a ten. By my estimate, this has happened in 15,000 hollywood movies in the last 10 years alone.

Awhile back my wife and I house-sat for this couple here in New York. They were friends with Finn Carter (the female lead in "Tremors,"). She showed up at the place while we were there and was a mess. Guess she hasn't had a lot going on since.

The butterfly effect. I had to deal with Ashton, but the story is really well written, and it all ties together at the end.

I just saw The Girl Next Door the other day. I only watched about the first hour, so I didn't see the end, but it wasn't half bad up to that point. Elisha Cuthbert looks AMAZING in this movie where she plays a porn star.

LOL. I just saw that movie this morning on HBO. It was pretty damn funny...the guy that played the pimp/porn producer was hysterical. Elisha needs to be the BOTD....

That's actually a very old story. Google "Pygmalion".

This one?

Pygmalion 1 is the king of Cyprus who fell in love with a statue of his own making, kissed the ivory statue, and thought the kisses were returned. He talked to it with words of love, and brought to it the kind of gifts that are thought to please girls, such as shells and pebbles, little birds, and flowers of all colors. Besides all this, he also draped it with robes, put rings upon its fingers, and a necklace around her neck. And by night, Pygmalion 1 put the statue on a bed, called it the consort of his bed, and rested its head upon soft pillows.

Such was Pygmalion 1's life with the statue. When the time came for the festival of Aphrodite to be celebrated, Pygmalion 1 visited it and prayed to the goddess to have as wife one like his ivory maid. Aphrodite understood he did not mean one like his ivory maid, but the ivory maid itself. So when Pygmalion 1 returned home and kissed his ivory statue, he discovered it was warm as he was kissing not ivory but flesh.

Pygmalion 1 married she who had been a statue, and Aphrodite, who had given life to it, came to the wedding. Pygmalion 1 himself was given a long life.

I don't think that's the same thing, but the first part describes the statue of Mandy Moore that I'm currently building in my apartment pretty accurately.

Recently, "Love, Actually", and "Hellboy".

Hellboy is being broadcast on ENC at 10:35 AM this Wednesday btw. PG-13 tale starring Ron Perlman - monster-like, son-of-devil turns out to be hero - decent effects, heartwarming story.

Local tv guide gave it 3 1/2 stars; YMMV.

I was thinking more along the lines of this. Of course, Shaw based his story on the myth you reference.

Here's a page that breaks down the most popular plots.

Hey...Stop Stabbing Me! was actually a really good (low budget) movie.

The writers of that movie wrote National Lampoon's Dorm Daze as well (which I havn't seen).

It's cheap and highly recommended (just keep in mind it was filmed using a DV camera, not film, and was made with about $50; during the commentary they say something like, "Everyone said Blair Witch Project had no budget. They had over $10,000, and we had $50! Now tell me who had no budget!" ).

Daredevil. Everyone writing about this movie seems to hate it and of course, there's the Affleck Factor, so I was ready to write this one off going in. I think the movie rocks. Michael Clarke Duncan was a great choice for The Kingpin and Affleck wasn't too shabby. Farrell nearly steals the film as Bullseye. Jennifer Garner is always good eye candy. Favreau was good as his friend too. Solid story.

Hellboy is a pretty good movie. I was impressed at the job they did with that.

I've been known to hold my own, but that involves a whole different film genre entirely!!!

Oh, man, yer killin' me.

And the movie I thought was unexpectedly great was "Napolean Dynamite." Never, ever thought I'd like it, but I laughed my ass off at the dryness of it, and by the time Lafawnda showed up, I was laughing so hard I think I peed myself a little bit.
