granitestatebillsbackers Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 [/i] From the Buffalo News: The Bills are getting some help from an old Samoan folk custom these days. After the team finishes its stretching at the start of every practice, strength and conditioning coach Brad Roll calls a player to the middle of the field to lead the team in one last calisthenic, usually three jumping jacks. One day each of the past several weeks he has called up defensive tackle Lauvale Sape, who has led the team in a chant from his homeland. Sape was born in Samoa and moved to Hawaii when he was 12. The players like it so much they have done it in the locker room after the past two wins. "It's something my people used to intimidate others," Sape said. "It's to bring the spirits around each other. It's more like a war dance. I've done it since I was young. It happens in our villages and community. Guys like it. It brings out a little spirit." "I'm waiting for him to do a Samoan rain dance or something like that," said running back Shaud Williams. --- Try to tell me it wouldn't be the COOLEST thing ever to hear 70,000+ Bills fans screaming out a Samoan war chant while on D. Sape would be totally pumped, and so would the rest of the unit. The offensive players wouldn't be able to hear the signals, and if they started laughing, Sape would kick their asses. If someone gets the words to the chant on this board, we can get this started.

You sound surprised with the Sapesters leadership skills. The man is destined to make the Hall of fame..
DeeRay Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Ah, yes... the Sapester. War chant, war dance. I always wondered why he took up a valuable roster spot. Now we know.
krazykat Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Oh, where have the days where some simple solid football were the order of the day. This team is a live soap opera.
granitestatebillsbackers Posted October 21, 2005 Author Posted October 21, 2005 Hey, if it gets the players fired up, what's the harm? A win is a win. I have contacted Sape in the hopes that he will agree. I will keep you posted on progress.
johnk Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Maybe we can fire up the old "ouija " board. Get a few more "spirits" on board. crap.
RuntheDamnBall Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Quick question: who do Samoans fight in a war, seeing as how they have an island to themselves?

Guffalo Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 I wouldn't want to mess with them, those guys are friggin' huge! 481857[/snapback] Of course, I wouldn't want to mess with a huge guy in a dress either.....
Gavin in Va Beach Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Personally I think they'd play even better if they started saying "DYNOMITE!" like Jimmy Walker in Good Times...

sweet baboo Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 so...is this guy going to start or what or is he just going to have fun chanting from the sidelines
Bear Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 usually three jumping jacks. While the rest of the story is plently interesting , I think we just figured out why the Bills tend to fade late in the game.
IDBillzFan Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 I'm told most Samoan chants feature heavy cowbell.
