do you have sights on your barrel or do you have a scope? i need to get a scope soon and i've never used one before...seems like it'd be difficult to follow a moving deer with a scope

i've shot it open sighted before, but i have the scope on it (a tasco pronghorn, great scope for the $), and have always hunted with the scope...its not too tough to follow a moving deer, because you arent moving the gun that much. From my stand, its basically just swiveling the gun to follow the deer. Also, altho you prolly know this, if the deer is running, just shout/scream/yell at it...usually stops them dead in their tracks, giving you the shot...

I'd personally go with iron, rifle style sights on a slug barrel. You aren't talking lots of range, anyway. I used a 4x fixed on the Ruger, mostly for spotting in the brush over aiming. Also used a 4x fixed on my Remington 7400, good all around magnification. I also try hard not to take shots at running deer past 30-50 yards or so. "Moving deer" have a funny tendency to stop and look around. As far as tracking a moving target, just practice on cars at a distance, but try not to let them see you. Follow the target with your lead, and keep moving through the target as you fire. "Don't ambush". You are more likely to miss by tracking ahead and jerking to a stop to fire than continuing a smooth action.

This will probably be another case of whatever works best for you, and the style and conditions which you hunt in. I like to still hunt, and rarely use a stand. Don't know the availabilty for an 870, but I have used a high profile see through scope mount before that allowed me to use iron sites under the scope if I wanted to. It's a thought.

I've got one too, it's a popular one. Has anyone ever hunted deer with a handgun? My .357 is "legally big enough", but I don't trust myself to get a good shot with it. Although I think it might be fun with a scoped .454 or something...

i'll keep that in mind...see if my friends don't shoot me instead for shouting and scaring the deer away

i actually don't think i have a choice...i bought a combo package from gander mountain that came with a slug barrel and shot barrel separately (haven't actually taken a good look at the slug barrel until recently)...the slug barrel looks to be all set up for a scope so I guess i'll look into the tasco and the 4x you mentioned

i'll probably practice on my dogs in the backyard or something...lest my wife thinks i went insane and went Mohammed/Malvo...i'm also surrounded by liberal supernuts (i live near RIT) in a well traffic'd neighborhood and someone will probably call the cops on me if they see a barrel pointed at traffic

Thanks for the advice

Also spend the extra time to make sure you've got your eye-relief right. Don't just bolt it on there and forget about it. If you've got that set pretty good, you should be able to just pull it up to your face and not see the "black ring."

if they are running or moving, this is a good way to get them stop, at least for a split second...it scares them, then stop momentarily, and usually its plenty long enouhg to get the shot off...
