Annan - U.S. Violated International Law

This is not news - anyone who is a lawyer or even has a basic notion of international law knows this to be true. The scary part is that the neo-cons don't care?! That is their answer to this ciritque. They see international law as an unfortunate mistake of the 20th century. They are on a mission to erase the 20th century (abolish international law, new deal programs, worker rights, anti-trust laws, enviromental protections, etc., etc,).

However, the neo-cons further destabilize the global community by violating international law in such acute ways, when we should be striving to strengthen international law! Terrorism, global poverty, and AIDS are global problems that will require global solutions. Kerry should be all over this. How can Bush continue to say that he worked hard to gain international support! I laugh at that statement everytime I hear it.

Read UN Resolutions 678, 687 and 1441. Read together these resolutions do the following:

Demand that Saddam Hussein leave Kuwait.

Demand that Saddam Hussein immediately dispose of all weapons of mass destruction

Require that Saddam Hussein provide ample proof to the United Nations that these weapons have been destroyed and that no active weapons program for such weapons exists.

Allow any member nation of the United Nations to take military action against Saddam Hussein if the provisions of these resolutions are not completely complied with.

Saddam didn't comply. The U.S. is a member nation of the United Nations. The U.S. compelled compliance through the use of military force, as authorized by these resolutions.

if kofi doesn't like how we behave, i say we just withdraw our membership (and our funds) and watch the UN go the way of the League of Nations

I don't think we are up to date on our membership "dues".

Does/has the US even/ever paid them?

Am I wrong?

Saddam DID leave Kuwait.

Saddam never HAD any weapons of mass destruction, per NONE found AND Colin Powell today admitting they will probably NOT find any, AND

Require that Saddam provide ample proof. GOOD ONE, since we invaded BEFORE Hans Blix finished his report.

The UN should have taken care of this LONG BEFORE this crazy war that wrecked the whole country, and destabilized it, dragging us into this mess.

You must be one of the only people to think he NEVER had them.

Well the fact that he kicked the UN insepectors out for a few years that means nothing...I think poor saddam was just misunderstood he really was a nice guy.

He never had any? Tell it to the Kurds.

Also, the fact that he buried them in the desert, in a muslim cemetary or sent them to Syria doesn't mean they never existed.

No, Saddam got his ass kicked out of Kuwait. Big difference.

Tell that to the Iranians and Kurds. Hell, tell that to the guys that just pulled a couple of tons of enriched uranium out of Iraq this past June.

One constant complaint of ALL the inspection teams was that Saddam never came clean on anything, and used a variety of methods to keep major portions of his weapons programs hidden, such as: hide in plain sight (pesticide plants doubling as chemical weapons plants, veterinary labs doubling as bioweapons R&D sites), partial demobilization (i.e. "Here's a pile of Scud missile parts. Might be all 850 missiles, might be only 600. Good luck finding out exactly how many."), or just simply keeping things secret (e.g. their bioweapons program, which wasn't disclosed until defectors informed the inspectors where and how it was hidden.) Even Blix admitted that the documentation Iraq provided to him was largely crap; nothing more than a photocopy of the last report the Iraqis gave the UN 5 years previously. The Iraqis rarely provided anything meaningful to the inspectors, and I'd guess what they did provide had to be coerced.

The UN should have taken care of this LONG BEFORE this crazy war that wrecked the whole country, and destabilized it, dragging us into this mess.

On THAT, we are agreed. "This resolution says you have to do what you're told, under threat of us passing another resolution." Yeah, sure...
