Mike In Illinois Posted August 20, 2004 Posted August 20, 2004 In listening to Chicago sports radio, their beat reporters are saying that Ruben will be a starter at guard for the team this year. Last week against the Rams he was a second-teamer; he must have played well enough to gain the attention of Lovie Smith and Terry Shea.
tatonka12 Posted August 20, 2004 Posted August 20, 2004 good for him! I know alot of people dont like rubin round here,I admit I dont see how he got to all those pro bowls but he's alright in my book . good luck rubin
Jack D. Ripper Posted August 20, 2004 Posted August 20, 2004 I still don't understand why he quit on the team last year. Still, he would be our starting LG if he was still here. What will Lovie if Brown keeps jumping offsides on third down?

Be objective and point the finger where it really belongs.

BuffaloBob Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 Actually he became the starter after starting OG Rex Tucker was lost for the season. 1639[/snapback] Actually, the article posted by Millbank says Tucker is out 8-10 weeks, which would be like 4-6 regular season games.
millbank Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 here is another artilce regarding Ruben Starting called " Brown Overcome politicking" part of it says: Brown has played in and started 136 consecutive games, yet for some reason, the Bears have been reluctant to anoint him a starter. Is it because he hasn't had a great camp? Like any veteran, he has eased into the season, making sure he prepares himself without leaving his game in Bourbonnais. The suspicion (and nobody will come out and say it) is that the Bears wanted to create competition at guard and the new coaches wanted to evaluate Terrence Metcalf and Gandy because they knew what they had in Brown. How else do you explain the fact that first Gandy and then Metcalf were put in the lineup ahead of Brown? And when Metcalf went down with a sprained ankle in the first preseason game, Gandy was moved into the starting lineup in practice ahead of Brown. It's almost as though the team knew Brown never would relinquish the position once he was deemed a starter. To give Metcalf another shot at the job, Gandy was moved ahead of Brown. Such team politics don't interest Brown, who unlike many other alleged key members of the offensive line -- Gandy, Metcalf, Steve Edwards and Aaron Gibson -- is under contract beyond next season. Brown signed a three-year deal. -the point being Ruben was going to be the starter the bears just wanted to see what the other guys could do" Brown Overcomes Politicking
