Mark VI Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 I'm well aware of the shortcomings of our OL concerning pass blocking. Yet they do open holes for the running game. So if your RB shows he can get 100 + yards if you give him the rock enough, should the Coaches keep asking the young, inexperienced QB to throw passes downfield, which have little chance of being completed ? How many offensive plays are we literally wasting each game ? 10 ? 15 ? The playcalling is very unrealistic after 3 games. You play to the strength of your roster, not play Madden 2006 with players who don't have the ability to beat certain defensive packages. Right now, we have a first year QB who is fighting himself. He's not throwing the ball at all. He's trying to aim it/guide it to his receivers and not coming close on many plays. Many times, he has little time to throw. Run the ball. What is so galling to Mularkey/Clements that they can't accept this ? Quit trying to squeeze the square peg into the round hole and let your young QB take some baby steps before asking too much of him. Run the ball and rediscover the TE for short passes. Go downfield a couple times a game. Let the confidence of the kid grow slowly. Right now, he plays as if HE needs to do it all. He doesn't and that reflects squarely on the coaching staff.

The Jokeman Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Run The Damn Ball. 457430 We ran the damn ball for 172 yards Sunday, which is pretty good. The problem is we need to supplement the running with some sort of passing game to keep drives alive, score TDs inside the redzone and start winning again.

So throw the ball 20-30 yards downfield to a receiver who isn't open. That will work. Ignore the TE who is wide open 6-10 yards downfield. That doesn't look good on Sportscenter.

I think their play calling actually gets worse in the red zone. If we would hand off to McGahee and pound the ball inside the 20, I am convinced we would have 2-3 more TD's right now. The Madden crack is dead on as Clements seems to always be trying to be out strategizing his opposing coordinator. This just in, if the run is working, KEEP RUNNING.

One thing you have to expect with a young QB is that he will get locked onto guys and not see open men from time to time. It's been 3 freaking games. 3.
VABills Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Yes 457435 I was kind of joking as I believe someone else had this same revelation prior to this, and was discounted for the coaches know more. He must have been a pretty smart fellow also.

The play calling in week one seemed focused on getting JP into flow early etc. Yes running the ball is important but need to keep 8 - 9 out of the box as TB had done to us. We need to start getting JP comfortable early each game with quick hits to wideouts, slants and a few draw plays. Major issue right now is OL cant give him enough time to even make first look. Hopefully MM and TC spend some time this week coming up with ways to utilize players

He picks him up immediately on snap and looks at him even in the 3 step quick drop. That is why the LBers have been jumping the slant routes. I agree we need quick stuff early, WR screens, RB screens, TE dumpoffs, etc.... early. But there are certain things JP just doesn't do well right now even in the short passing game.

If they fail, they still have a solid FG chance.
ch19079 Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 you can NOT run on every down. you can not be that predictable in the NFL. you have to change it up a bit. i do agree that we should limit his passing plays, but you have to pass at some point.

Major issue right now is OL cant give him enough time to even make first look. 457449 Point taken. During the pre-season, Losman was able to hit the quick slants. Houston saw this and almost picked a couple off during our opener, reading that play with ease. ( as VA stated above ) It doesn't help that he's staring down his receivers, which most young QB's do. Since then, that play hasn't worked and the coaching calls haven't adjusted to that at all. Why isn't the short pass to the TE being considered ? Sitting in the stands, I've lost count how many times I've seen Campbell wide open a few yards past the line of scrimmage in the Houston and Atlanta games. It's not a hard pass to complete.

Sitting in the stands, I've lost count how many times I've seen Campbell wide open a few yards past the line of scrimmage in the Houston and Atlanta games. It's not a hard pass to complete. I get the sense that at this point in his career, JP is not comfortable throwing to the middle of the field. He knows that he needs to protect the ball in order for this team to win with the rest of its very good roster. As a result he seems to be avoiding any kind of traffic whatsoever and trying to put the ball where his target is the only one that has a chance to make a play on it. He just doesn't trust his own eyes yet and doesn't want to throw the ball anywhere there might be a defender he doesn't see. I almost wish the staff would go ahead and tell him that throwing the occasional pick isn't the end of the world. Almost.....

VABills Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 So the QB isn't finding the open man and that's the coach's fault? 457487 Yes, because he isn't putting a young inexperienced QB in a position to succeed, and call plays that work. To constantly call for 30 yard patterns on first down at the beginning of games is stupid and poor coaching.
