And air drops aren't precision, either.  Where you aim and where it lands are two different points, sometimes vastly different.

And then the video today of a helicopter lowering a case of bottled water to a man. Pretty much spot-on. They had choppers dropping 3,000-lb sandbags into the levee on Thursday, but the leadership (such as it was) there couldn't think to deliver bottled water to the masses that were dying of thirst at the Superdome and elsewhere. Maybe several stupid people will die as they wait under it; better that than several hundred dying of dehydration. For some reason it didn't happen and this will continue to be discussed until some answers better than "Sh-- happens" are gotten. I'm sorry, but I refuse to accept that.

Yeah, I saw the same video. Relatively large expanse of open water, good for cushioning the fall and small chance of dropping it on someone. Just like at the Superdome. :)

Oh, and that box looked like it was big enough to supply 10,000 people, right? No? 5,000? No? So even if it does drop safely you'd probably have to drop hundreds of them to supply the folks there. Who is there to keep people from stampeding over to those boxes as they drop? I would imagine that people would simply stand by and wait nicely until the last box dropped, correct? And then make an orderly progression over to the supplies, right? And then how many people would drown in their homes while this operation went on?

They are dropping now because they have handfuls of people patrolling their own neighborhoods looking for neighbors to save.

The mayor said in his evacuation statement that people needed to bring 3-5 days worth of provisions to the shelters with them, as the city would be unable to supply them....

I suppose the reports of people getting frisked at the Superdome were just people looking for cheap thrills. The National Guard and police were there. Don't give me that. You tell the people to stay back and there will be enough for everyone and once they see the containers coming down, they'll start believing you; draw a perimeter and secure it. Whaddya mean how do you do this? Thing is, it takes someone with leadership to get it done. Mike Brown was too busy staring inside his colon and doing interviews on the networks to be bothered; only when the NG general got there did sh-- start getting done.

If you keep the possibility of things going wrong versus the consequences of not doing them, no one would get a flu shot, have bypass surgery or drop humanitarian supplies in Iraq. I sure as hell wouldn't want you in charge when the sh-- hits the fan. "You should've prepared better" isn't a solution to the problem of people dying of thirst. At my job when I run short a half a ton of stone on a wall, standing around for three hours saying I should have gotten more stone isn't an answer. You STFU and go get more stone.

Tell that to all the women who were raped in the Superdome.

After a week of this, I'm realizing that N.O. and the state are blaming everyone but themselves...

Their disaster response plan says "Future plans include a post-emergency response plan..." Yes, they actually say that.

<_< Is it any surprise they're blaming everyone short of Elvis? Wouldn't you?

More stupid questions to ask...

In all honesty I know what you are saying.

When you become flooded under 10 feet of water... What do you think you should do?

Maybe outside help is needed?

They failed to secure a plan where that outside help could get to them.

They probably said, "Why even bother... Were in deep doo-doo anyway." That is so defeatist... Why the defeatist attitude?

To say the very least, this is very irresponsible.

The Corps ripped apart the Community Haven idea because it was land based... Sayin: "Where are you gonna put and shelter all the people". To me this was irresponsible. Why the negativity? They had to try anything, fast?

That is the kind of negative attitude from the establishment that the weak-minded NO and La. government succumbed to.

Here they were trying... Only to get shot-down. How many other ideas were dumped by the levee and canal minded establishment?

That weak-mindedness proved to be their downfall. Like the battered-wife that returns living with an abusive husband.

WTF?

Well, of course, if he didn't decide to "play dead" he would have been more than glad to make Graceland the shelter of last resort...
