Coach Tuesday Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 http://www.buffalobills.com/news/news.jsp?news_id=3339 Orchard Park, NY – The Bills today announced that the team has waived P Steve Baker, WR Tony Brown, RB ReShard Lee, DB Rob Lee, DE Uyi Osunde, LB Daryl Towns, and QB Tory Woodbury.
Fezmid Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 I'm surprised by Lee being cut. The other 6? Who cares. CW
BRH Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 Steve Baker? I thought for sure his thirty-yard line drives would keep him on the team.
Rayzer32 Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 Kinda surprised Woodbury didn't get more of a chance.
Ramius Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 dammit, shouldnt have cut woodbury...now we have worthless shane matthews...at least woodbury had potential...
MartyBall4Buffalo Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 dissapointed that woodbury got cut, I would've rather have him than shane matthews. Not suprised by any of the other cuts. Lee is an afterthought with gates and williams battling it out for the #2 job, and with the amount of kr specialists we have he was a longshot at that as well.
Kelly the Dog Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 Woodbury was interesting, but lets face it, he was never going to be a quarterback. He has the athleticism but after a good small college career, nobody drafted him as a QB, he played for the Jets who tried him at other positions except QB, like safety and WR. He tried for the Bills who envisioned him running with the ball and playing specials teams and as a potential Slash kind of player, as in, not passing the ball much. He really isn't a prospect at QB, especially at 27 and ineligible for the PS. He's just a very talented athlete who unfortunately, doesn't really have a position for him in the NFL. And we really couldn't use him as a Slash guy even if we wanted to because of the QB rules.

Why waste a roster spot on him when you could at least keep someone with an ounce of potential...

Well, the purpose of keeping Woodbury was to USE him as something other than QB, when riding the pine as a needed-once-in-a-blue-moon emergency QB. I would seriously like to know how many times ANY team had to resort to their 3rd string/emergency QB in a game, over the course of a year, 2 years, 3 years, whatever? I doubt it happens more than twice a season. Not high enough to warrant keeping a 3rd QB who can ONLY play QB, and not that well at that.
Kelly the Dog Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 but its shane friggin matthews! Why waste a roster spot on him when you could at least keep someone with an ounce of potential... 421054 Because The Bills already have their QB of the future they are grooming, and already have a veteran back-up locked up for the next three-four years. Not a lot of teams have those two things at the same time, which is why they always want to groom a young guy at #3. We could find some waiver wire project to put on the PS as a long term possibility at QB, but let's face it, The Bills brass thinks Matthews is going to help Losman, not come into a game. Remember, they courted and re-signed Matthews AFTER they had already grabbed Holcomb.

Doesn't have to do anything but attend practices, film sessions, and games, and offer advice. Might not pay as much as 3rd string QB, but if that's what he's there for (to be paid), you don't want him anyway.
silvermike Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 Tory Woodbury was never going to be an NFL QB - he's already 27, with about as many cuts to his name as Ryan Leaf. The Bills spent some time fooling around and seeing what he had in special teams, but he was mostly there just as a body to train the receivers and spare the arms of our top three guys. It's a shame he just didn't have an NFL position - he's a terrific athlete. ReShard Lee's cut still surprises me a little bit, I haven't quite seen it from Gates yet. But generally, I think it might be a good sign for Haddad - another KR off the roster.
Sound_n_Fury Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 Well, the purpose of keeping Woodbury was to USE him as something other than QB, when riding the pine as a needed-once-in-a-blue-moon emergency QB. I doubt it happens more than twice a season. Not high enough to warrant keeping a 3rd QB who can ONLY play QB, and not that well at that. 421059 The 3rd QB plays a lot more important roll than just sitting in the pressbox. They generally run the scout team during the weekly practice and, in Matthews case, can provide important input in meetings, etc. A guy like Woodbury can only run around a lot and probably couldn't mimic a starting-caliber NFL QB in practice nearly as well as Shane.

I mentioned about joining in meetings, but if Matthews is running the scout team and JP is running the 1st team, what is Holcomb doing?
Kelly the Dog Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 Again, they could offer him a job as an assistant. Might not pay as much as 3rd string QB, but if that's what he's there for (to be paid), you don't want him anyway. 421064 Unless there are injuries to your #1 and #2 QB, or either of the first two suck, your #3 simply isn't going to play. If, God forbid, Losman and Holcomb BOTH went down, do you really want Tory Woodbury running the Bills rather than Shane Matthews? Granted, yes, you could then re-sign him if he were a coach, but he wouldn't be in playing shape, or throwing to the receivers or running the plays in practice. The point really is that Woodbury is a marvelous athlete who is never going to play QB, he's David Dinkins revisited, in a little bigger, tougher body. And if the Bills weren't over-stocked with ST demons there may be a reason to keep him because he could help, but he won't even play ST, especially as #3 QB, and wouldn't even be available to run gadget plays as a Slash guy.
Albany,n.y. Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 Well..was i ever wrong about Lee. 421061 What did you see in Rob Lee that made you think he'd make it? Seriously, I thought ReShard Lee had a lot of potential until I watched him play & basically studder step his way to the waiver wire. He should realize that when they hand you the ball, it's not an invitation to one of those TV dancing contests.
