Reason #186 why WGR sucks

Recommended Posts

...there wasn't one!  I know, it's pre-season.  But this Buffalo!!!  We talk Bills year round!!!  You couldn't get someone in the studio to do 2-hours of call-ins after the game???.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

What's my point? My point is the Bills -- because of The Coach -- don't let WGR do their job as a radio station without making it extremely difficult. If WGR does anything Bills related, they usually get letters from NFL lawyers saying don't do that again. It's a battle every day for WGR just to be able to say the words Buffalo Bills on air.

PTR, I'm not saying one way or the other whether WGR is good or not......but for someone who hates it so much, you sure do tune in alot!

If it makes you feel better, the Falcons post game report usually contains a "how to make your BMW look better than your neighbor's Mercedes" bit.

Suck as it may, it's better than what I get now that Empire is no more. On my drives up north, I start tuning in 550 around Cincinatti. On a strong day, I get some home town radio around Columbus.

Thats what has people pissed off. If you want sports talk and don't have satellite radio, you don't have an alternative.

Its like when you watched scrambled porn as a kid. With the scrambled porn you are hoping for an occasional glimpse of something good. With WGR you are hoping for the occasional legitimate sports talk. Either way you'd be much happier if you had a choice that didn't include the interferring garbage, but both are slightly better than pounding the pud to the lingerie section of the sears catalog.

Kinda wondered about that myself; didn't expect to hear baseball updates when I turned on the radio. Wonder if that will also apply to the Detroit game.

Ah well, there are other choices - 97 Rock had roughly an hour's worth of postgame (which ended about the time I got to Salamanca, just as the signal was fading out anyhoo). I'm hoping my local stations on the BillsRadioNetwork will carry at least some of the postgame show, as they did last regular season.

Oh, but waitaminute - Jim Brinson is hosting the WGRF postgame again this year. For those of you who don't like him either - and based on some of the potshots at him I've seen here over the years, I know you're out there - guess you're STILL out of luck.....

Look for yourself. Go to the WGR website and see if you see "Buffalo Bills" mentioned anywhere other than in a news article. The WGR Bills Report is called "Buffalo Football Report" and it's not like WGR is reporting on UB football. There are no Bills logos anywhere as well.

News articles are the only way WGR can say Buffalo Bills because that's freedom of press.

Now look at every other radio/tv station website that isn't part of the Bills TV/Radio network and you'll see they have much more freedom with the Bills.

You didn't say their website, you said....

"If WGR does anything Bills related, they usually get letters from NFL lawyers saying don't do that again. It's a battle every day for WGR just to be able to say the words Buffalo Bills on air."

I took this to mean that even talking about the Bills on the air is a battle for WGR?

The WGR website is an obvious extension of the station. On-air, on the website, it's all the same.

I still don't understand. WGR is not allowed to talk about the Bills on the air or they have to be careful what they say?

I'm not trying to be a pain, I just want to know what this lawyer/legal stuff is all about?

I too have heard this. I even seem to remember rather sarcastic banter last year related to the fact that they were told in a letter by the Bills that "Bills" was protected by copyright and there were not given permission to use it.

They are allowed to talk about the Bills, just not use the name

Does that mean they they can cover and discuss the Bills like a news event, but can't use the name in their adverstising or promotions (like, "The Bills Station")? That would make sense to me.

The point was to not misappropriate the Bills name to construe that a program you are putting on is sanctioned/produced/licensed by the team. Thus shows/content called "The Bills Report" is not usable but "Buffalo Sports Report" is. Trademarks 101, WNSA was complaining the same way last year....remember the whole schpiel with Howard referring them by a weird name?

Mr. Clutch, being the webmaster I'm sure you can provide links to other "non-sanctioned" use that you refer to?

Still don't see how this prevents WGR from doing a "PostGame Show?"
