Quite Frankly, Steven A. Smith is not popular

What ever happened to Roy Firestone?

411173

I was wondering that too...

from his website:

In his home town of Miami Beach, Florida, Firestone began his career as a sports reporter and anchor before moving to Los Angeles as a sports anchor for KCBS-TV (1977-85). He was host of ESPN's SportsLook (1980-90) and is currently host of Up Close Prime Time. He hosts Mark Cuban's HDNet Face To Face With Roy Firestone and AOL's Time Out With Roy Firestone. Firestone currently lives in Los Angeles.

he must be sick, because its like his 3rd or 4th post today that was under 5,000 characters...whats going on FFS?

Believe it or not I do work for a living. My lengthier posts come from me having the benefit of conference calls which I can monitor and be ready when asked to speak (which is fairly predictable given the agenda but I'm on monitoring while conversation occurs I have nothing to offer as the agenda can be changed and my area gets moved up). Thus, I am able to mute my side of the call and still listen and type to my hearts content (and even get paid to do this on occaision).

Today is simply a busier day with preparations for a meeting later so thus my posts are less verbose.

ESPN has been stinking for at least the last three years. Conventional thought was that, even then, there was "good ESPN" and "bad ESPN." I baught that for a while, but now, even "good ESPN" is pretty sad. Prime Time, and Monday Night Countdown, which used to be "must see tv" for me, are now, "if I'm home, with nothing else to do" tv.

At one time, they covered each game on Prime Time, and showed you all the diffetent scoring plays, along with the unusual plays. Now, on Prime Time, they just show, essentially, the same package of clips that they show on Sport Center, and ESPN news...with the exception of whatever the one or two "big" matchups of the week.

I can recall a few times the last few years, where they showed no Bills highlights at all on Prime Time. Granted, the Bills were pretty awful most of the time, but who really needs to see yet even more hype about the same old story lines that they bombard their viewers with all week leading up to the games...

I went about 4 months without watching ESPN at all...I gotta say, it was nice. Of course, being a sucker for the NFL, I have to start tuning in now, but all I have really heard, NFL wise, the last few weeks is about Terell Owens and his increasingly boring act.

If I were fortunate enough to get the NFL Network this season, I might very easily be able to avoid ESPN altogether...I hate the fact that they are getting Monday Night Football...

Don't watch much ESPN any more. But I still love Baseball Tonight and I will lose sleep to watch it.

I just wish they would stick to showing sports highlights and stay away from doing movies or tv series. I can't handle the endless previews of bad movies with B-movie actors; Tom Sizemore as Pete Rose, Barry Pepper as Dale Earnhadt... And then there's that Casino show. Their work is so damned amateurish, it's painful just to watch the previews that they relentlessly plug, jamming down your throat months ahead of their showing.

I have my own idea for a sports show that i'd like to pitch to ESPN. Its called Gladiator Call-Ass-See'um

Its a format similar to Around the Horn, where assclown commentators like Steven A Smith, Max Kellerman, and Mike Lupica square off in one on one Roman Gladiatorial combat. The winner is awarded 60 seconds to spout off on whatever topic they choose. The loser, well there is no real loser as "Sportsnation" benefits

At the end of the season, the assclown left standing will be granted a victory lap and applauded in the center of the colleseum. At which time, animals which represent teams in every major sport will be released (Lions, Tigers, Bears, oh my!) to devour the champion

Yeah I caught him on the Dan Patrick Show being interviewed by Linda Cohn.  He said that the reason the media has been so negative towards Terrell Owens is that the white journalists are all jealous of him because he's richer than them and he's black.  Just an idiot from start to finish.

411192

If that is infact true, what is the difference in this statement vs. Limbaugh's statements about McNair? I dont want this to turn into a white vs. black argument, but seriously..... The door should swing both ways!

That's probably his reasoning as to why none of us white people are watching his horrible show as well.

We must all be jealous and can't stand to see a successful black man who became famous for shouting EVERY other WORD.

Yes the door should swing both ways. But it doesn't. There was no national outrage and a week of headlines condemning Smith for his comments.

I doubt that the door will completely swing both ways regarding comments by blacks regarding whites because the door did not swing both ways regarding one race getting the short end of the stick in terms of past history.

The justification is there that consideration of these issues today should be equal, but the facts are that it certainly was not equal in the past, due to the effects of the past outcomes would not be equal today if everyone was suddenlu and correctly judged only by their individual character, actually people are not judged solely based on their individual character but study after studt which attempt to hold racial issues as equal make findings such as African-Americans are far less likely to receive loans from banks even when they present income and wealth at similar levels to white applicants.

I wish everyone were simply judged by their own character and the facts of their situation but they are not.

Perhaps we want to make it incumbent upon Africam-Americans or other racial minorities to always demonstrate the fiar judgment we all should have. However, even if Steven Smith and all African-Americans employed race neutral fairness I'm afraid the door would not be swinging both ways if they were totally fair.

Society has improved a lot since the days of Jim Crow Laws and segregated lunch counters, but I'm afraid we aren't there yet. One should stand up an dquestion the racial politics of Steven Smith, but in the same breath one needs to also question the racial politics of David Duke who was almost elected the governor of LA no too long ago and also acknowledge the actions of folks from Colin Powell to be more fair and accurate about this issue.

Yes and no. They are not going to hit homeruns every time out. I couldn't believe they gave that idiot his own show and stage because I had never heard of anyone that liked him. But it also seems clear that they have been successful with loud-mouthed, obnoxious blowhards who think they're a lot smarter and funnier than they are because that is how they built-up their franchise with shows like Sports Center.

411144

Yeah Thiesman and Maquire are good examples of loud mouth obnoxious blowhards who are stupid enough to think they are smart. I actually got annoyed with the network several years ago when it seemed everything they said had to be funny or some sort of smart ass quip. Network is just plain boring and tired.
