in a few weeks. Just wondering some hot spots I should hit downtown (haven't been back since we moved away when I was 9). Places to eat, fun bars/clubs, the artsy area (can't think of the name), and anything else I should check out. I'll be in for a full week and will have all my evenings open. Thanks!

In what year were you "9"? It matters... <_<

Downtown Buffalo, Chippewa Street. Restaurants, bars, comedy club, if you haven't been in the area in quite some time you won't believe the change.

Are you staying downtown and do you have a car? If so, Bisons game, Anchor Bar, Chippewa bar scene, the Canadian Ballet, Niagara Falls(jet boat ride, maid of the mist, cave of the winds, etc...), just to name a few.

We moved the day after my 9th birthday, September of 1980. I have been back since, but not downtown or anyplace other than my relatives. But I haven't been in the city since then.

If you're there sept. 1, the Spin doctors are playing Thursday in the Square. Best event throughout the summer. Also, the chicken wing festival is labor day weekend. The wing eating contest is great. There's a little asian woman competing with guys who tip the scales at 300--sonya something. Two years ago I saw her break the record in the pre-lims, but she must have od, cuz she failed to win the next day.

Once you get to town, pick up an Artvoice, it'll have all the info you need for a good time in the city.

Dear Penn,

Buffalo waterfront has a few nice spots. We live in a suburb of Niagara Falls and there is the new casino "Seneca Niagara" there. If you gamble, it is terrific but even if not, the buffet there is worth the trip. Another great spot is just across the border - Niagara-on-the-Lake ... has a lot of local wineries and if you are into theatre there is the shaw festival. On the American side, Youngstown is home to Olde Fort Niagara and there is a War of 1812 festival coming up. Lewiston, will have a terrific Peach Festival in early September. Just get the Buffalo News Gusto (or look at Buffalonews.com) to look at activities ahead - it is usually publishedin Thursday or Friday editions. Good luck!

The artsy area is known as Allentown.

Every time that I go back I like to visit the observation deck on the top of City Hall.

(Years ago you could see War Memorial Stadium from the deck).

Consider the Canadian side of the Falls and if you have time check out Toronto.

Beyond that stuff your face with pizza, wings and subs...

La Hacienda on Hertel Ave. in North Buffalo:

They have all you can eat spag for $2.25 on Monday and Tuesday nights. The food is great and the prices are unbelievable.
