I think its a bad idea. I think they should wait several more years to see what happens to Niagara Falls. Already, all the old restaurants and businesses in the falls are closing because everyone goes straight to the casino.

Buffalo needs to market itself along with Niagara Falls, not as a competitor. They need to market the architectural and cultural history of Buffalo as a tourist attraction to go along with a visit to the Falls and the casino in Niagara Falls. And ultimately, if the casino in Niagara Falls kills the city, you can expect the same thing to happen to Buffalo.

Also, I disagree with having it be an Indian casino. I think that if the Niagara Falls casino proves to be a success, that can be used as political ammunition to get gambling legalized by the state. Granted, this will just bring in large gaming corporations, but at least they will have to pay the same taxes that any other business in the city pays, which I'd imagine are far more than the slot revenue sharing that they'll get from the Senecas.

Since their inception, the casinos located in southeast Indiana have taken over 3 billion dollars out out of the tri-state area (where Ind, OH, and KY meet). That's a lot of scratch.

Granted, they do get tourists, but like most, the money comes from the locals. The casions pay tax, of course, which makes the State of Indina happy. and they do hire some people. The boom in restuarant sales didn't happen - the casinos sell good food on the cheap.

Its about PRIDE not money.

I know most people here have lived in Buffalo at one point in their lives. When you leave Buffalo, you suddenly feel that hometown pride. You even find your self bragging about things from Buffalo (where?).

Nobody ever cares about a city with a casino. Who brags about being from Las Vegas, or Detroit. You ever been to downtown Detroit? the sight of Detroits pitiful state might be enough to change your mind. There is just something about having a casino in your city which just causes you to stop caring about it. Sure money will come in. Thats about it though. Everything else will just be wiped aways by the lights and skyline of the casino.

This might be Masiello's final ax to the chopping block he calls Buffalo before he steps down. Greedy bastard that he is.

Were there any still open to begin with? I grew up in NF, and last time I was there Main Street was conservatively over 60% vacant. Shame too, as in the 70's and early 80's lots of people from Canada would come for the nightlife of downtown NF. Now having said that, I am one who is all for casino gambling, and from what my dad said the casino is really helping out the NF tax revenue base

Very soon they're going to announce the location of a facility downtown.  The News ran an article today discussing the posssible highs/lows based on what they see up on our side of the ditch.

Since it's New York State, I'm sure that:

a) There will be the creation of a "Buffalo and Erie County Casino Authority";

b) The Casino Authority will then create several hundred new civil service jobs;

c) the Casino Authority will then have the ability to "borrow" money like the Thruway Authority to make "improvements" around the area and then have a "temporary" increase in sales/property/income taxes to pay for the salaries and improvements;

d) The Casino Authority will then hire "consultants" to create a "master plan" which will be continually revised for the next 20 years;

e) The big plans they envision will become stagnant as people complain that there is "not enough diversity" and the plans are not "friendly" towards the "oppressed".

Economically a casino and gambling are probably necessary for Buffalo to do to defend itself from losing dollars to the Canadian casinos and the Niagara Falls casino. However, they are simply not economic development engines as:

1. The money they produce will mostly be local money which is useful to have folks spend here in the US and potentially in Erie rather than Niagara County, but it simply is not going to be new money unless there are other draws (this is why Las Vegas is going toward family and other entertainment to add value to the increasinly competiitve gambling draw, this in part is why Atlantic City is little more than a facade).

2. Casino customer in general are not good customers for supporting business like restaurants and other downtown attractions. We would not only need to create other attractions but pump and advertisely them furiously if we are going to draw people. Casinos must provide free rooms and food to gamblers to get them to come and spend real money on slot machines, et al. Between locals who do not use hotels and other things and the neuroses (sometimed phsychoses) that keeps gamblers gambling it is a huge effort to turn these bodies into a benefit for other businesses.

Personally, I think we should probably get a Buffalo casino but the main justification for one is as a defense measure so we keep the nickels of Buffalo gambling addicts and casual users ourselves rather than see this money go off to Canada or Niagara Falls. It makes far more sense to house this gambling in a location off to the side from downtown as it can be an option for those who want it, but economically is quite unlikely to be a centerpiece of action.

There will be some % of folks who fall prey to losing their (and unfortunately their families and perhaps their businesses $ to gambling addiction), but Niagara Falls or Canada are not so far away and gambling on the Internet is so ubiquitous that having a casino in Buffalo strikes me as not likely to increase overall the addicts and as long as the take from gambling pays for the increased health care and policing in requires I say simply deal with it.

I disagree with all of you.

Casinos offer roughly 500-600 jobs. That's just in the Casino. Ask Niagara Falls or Niagara County if they mind having to collect millions of dollars in tax money annually.

People cry that Buffalo will lose it's hometown shine, but it's those same people who left. I have a good idea for those people...Shut the F##@ up. Come here and support our economy. For those of you who bailed on this city because there was no good jobs 5-10-15 years ago, you have no right to criticize. You left and it's not your city anymore.

I'm a poker dealer and I do have a bias. Everyone said, drugs and hookers and all other types of things were going to happen to Niagara Falls. All wrong. The area has benefited greatly because of the Casino.

Go a step further and look at the Casino's in Irving and Salamanca. They have 150 more jobs than they did 3 years ago. They pay taxes. Our community benefits from a casino.

If you don't like Casinos, it's really simple, DON'T GO. Don't support them. No one is going to miss you. No one cries that you don't come. If there were more of you than there were of us, the Casino would be out of business right now.

But it's the fast growing business in WNY as well as the country.

NOTE: Buffalo lost it's home town shine years ago. Buffalo is a faultering city on it's last legs. Buffalo can't even keep it's own parks open. Buffalo is so far in debt it's literally ridiculous that we even have an argument against something that is going to bring both tax money and jobs to the community.

Ridiculous

BUFFALO HAS NO HOMETOWN SHINE.

What shines in Buffalo? We love it here because this is where we are from but how does Buffalo stack up to other cities? There isn't a comparison. Our city loses 6% of it's population annually because we are such a horribly run city.

I'm happy that you spend money in the community. I'm happy that you are supportive to the community.

Our shine is the Bills. Our shine is the Sabres. Our shine is fuggin chicken wings. Outside that, this city died when the plant on route 5 shut down. I didn't make it that way, I just recognize it.

In an article in yesterdays Buffalo News, they were talking about rumors regarding the location of the casino. One of the rumors involved putting the casino in the Central Terminal.....HA HA!! The chance of it going there in an area that has been on the steady decline for the last 40 years is slim and none. I hope Bass Pro goes in the Aud, because if not, the Aud will fall by the wayside as an old building which never got developed.........much like the Central Terminal.

delaware park

We have a zoo, that is slowly dying

elmwood & chippewa

the "Gin Mills" or just the fact that we call them that

strange things like the buffalo colored musicians club

our old buildings, Buffalo Central Terminal, Grain Mills, and countless other historical sites.

the food

the people

the polish/irish/italian history of some of the neighborhoods

that sign on military that say "acme nipple co."

all these things i like about buffalo and would be overshadowed by a casino.

Good memories, but I don't know how a new casino downtown is going to overshadow any of them? :blush:;)

Actually, all of those things are currently overshadowed by the sh------- economy that drives young people out of town.

A casino won't hurt. Our idiot politicians and the idiot unions that prop them up have already destroyed the city and if it's ever great again, it'll take at least a couple generations for that to happen.
