San-O Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Nice guy, but an abominal safety. 406915 He was a LB in college that TD thought they could covert, a "tweener", I think.

Dr. Fong Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Like SoCal said he's a tweener. But the guy is such a phenomenal physical specimen and has such a great work ethic that it was certainly worth the gamble. Too bad it looks like the Bills came up snake eyes on this one.
jester43 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 i didn't see a thing of the game so i don't know how bad he looked...but i say this: if he continues to play badass special teams, he deserves a spot on the roster. hell it took tasker 10 years to learn to play his position, but he certainly justified his place on the roster with s.t. play...

With the salary cap, special teams seem to matter more every season. This is why I would love to see the Bills keep Wire and Aiken if possible. Jmo.
ans4e64 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 i would rather have jim leonhard over him, in only 3 weeks jim is smarter than coy who's been here for 3 years

Just that it seems like he'll never make it at Safety.

Wire missed at least half a dozen tackles tonight...unacceptable for a defensive player, while Burns was in on just about every ST play. There are some younger, cheaper guys that can play ST that have more upside than Wire.

Sound_n_Fury Posted August 14, 2005 Author Posted August 14, 2005 Are you sure? I thought that Wire is a Stanford Grad. 406947 Wisconsin's a pretty brainy school as well...
brihs2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Wire was pitiful tonight... i really like leonhard and hope he gets a chance with the second team D to see if he can take wire's spot... i like Coy, but he just isn't anything but a ST player, if he had to be in the lineup because of an injury, i would be very scared.
Live&DieBillsFootball Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Wire was terrible and Leonhard looked like a player tonight. Also, Wire is a good ST player but comparing him to Tasker is a very big stretch. The Bills have a ton of good ST players, I don't think that they would miss Wire all that much.
stevewin Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Cool - YACWST - Yet Another Coy Wire Sucks Thread - can't be enough of those. I think I'll just repost basically the same thing now every time this subject comes up - my Ode to Coy - a response to the inevitable posts from the Coy Wire Apologists Club, or CWAC. Remember kids - CWAC is Whack! For the last three years the excuses from the Coy crowd have always been - he's only a rookie, he's only a 2nd year player, he's only 3rd year player, he's not playing the position he played in college! Guess what - this is the NFL - if you can't cut it at your position you find something else to do. This is year four - time is up - no more excuses - pack your bags. First off, I've said this a million times - but it is a huge misconception that Wire is some kind of tackling machine. I watched him closely for the last three years, and he was as bad, if not worse, in run support as in coverage. He consistently takes bad angles, is out of position, and over-pursues plays. YES - he did make a great stuffing tackle on James Stewart in a preseason game against Detroit two years ago. If the rules of football were changed so that the runner needed to remain stationary if Coy Wire was lining him up (Freeze!) - Wire would be an all pro. He is most skillfull, however, at jumping on the pile after the player has been stopped (a stationary pile) - one of the best I've ever seen. These deficiencies apply not only when he is playing safety, but anytime he is on the field - be it (God forbid as some have actually now wished for) at LB (?!) and yes, even STs. Now the Coy crowd will exclaim what an special teams demon he is - dare I say Tasker-like? Phhhlooooo (Blasphemy!). This is another part of the overblown myth that is Coy. Such an indispensible special teams player - yet never even led the special teams in tackles. Dominique Stevenson did in 2003 and Pierson Prioleau did last year. The fact that both these players are no longer here tells you that a player should bring more than STs play to stay on this team. Guess what - here is something more for those who continue to insist what an irreplaceable ST player Wire is: not only did Wire never lead the STs in tackles, last year he was not even in the top 4 (four) in ST tackles! Let me repeat that - he was not even the 4th best tackler on our STs last year. from this article: Bills talented ST players comes the following fact: "...so the only time Haggan, Stamer and Crowell get playing time is on special teams. However, that works out wonderfully for the Bills because those three are among the best special-teamers on the club. Last year they ranked 2-3-4 (Stamer 29, Crowell 28, Haggan 23) in special-teams tackles behind the departed Pierson Prioleau." I personally cannot ever recall Wire ever making a great (or even good) open field tackle on a return. I've seen him jump on a lot of piles after returns and see plenty of plays go right by him though. I've also seen him commit a very-boneheaded-very-unST-demon-like roughing the kicker penalty againt Cinn that almost cost us the game. I honestly don't know where this stuff about him being such an irreplaceable ST stud comes from. Also it is very important to understand that this coaching staff does not hesitate to put starters on STs - which mitigates the need for the ST 'specialist' anyway. But wait - the Coy crowd screams grasping for its last Coy Doesn't Suck Straw - he is our STs captain!!!!! Guess what - I was captain of all three of the sports I played in HS - but that didn't mean I was any good at them I started watching Wire the 2nd game of the 2002 season (the Minnesota game) when I kept seeing a player on the screen flying around like an idiot consistently missing play after play thinking "Who the hell is that idiot flying around like an idiot consistently missing play after play!". I soon realized it was Wire - and I watched him for that whole season - and contrary to what some people believe he did suck that whole season - bad. He was horrible. I watched it week after week as I keyed on him each game - out of position, missed tackles, overpursued plays. I saw him in person play The Single Worst Performance By A Defensive Player In The History Of The NFL against Oakland that year (I believe they named an ESPY after him for that). And whenever I said how bad he was the apologists came out - but he's only a rookie! Yes - true - and a really really sucky rookie at that. The next year the Bills brought in any two legged safety they could find (remember Chad Cota?) - they had no faith in Wire's ability. The Coy crowd seem to lament the passing of what could have been Coy's starting spot had not the Bills signed Milloy (!). Some people do not seem to understand this very simple point - the Bills went after Milloy because we didn't have a competent safety at the time - we needed somebody to replace Wire! He played poorly again when he saw action that year (but now as a really really sucky 2nd year player). Then came the embarrassing stupefying hysteria from the Coy crowd last year when Coy was going to make the switch to FS!! Imagine the backfield with Lawyer and Wire back there! Imagine how great that will be! Imagine the potency of the drugs required to actually think Wire could play FS when he couldn't even cover the 10 yards between him and the TE as SS! That experiment lasted about 3 days (as I predicted). And in the action he saw last year it was the same old Coy - watch him impotently flail in the end zone on the on the last play against Jax - watch him do the same thing on the last Rams TD in that game - watch him get beat consistently whenever he is in the game - he still sucks! (but now as a really really sucky 3rd year player!) Was it a coincidence that the Bills season turned around when Milloy came back and Wire was pushed off the field? The bottom line is that Coy is a very nice guy, does a lot of work for charity, is very handsome, would probably look great in little tight shorts with little red hat covered in dirt , can jump out of the shallow end of a pool , ran up a hill with rocks in HS , BUT he simply does not have the talent, skills, ability, or instinct to be a decent player in the NFL. The Coy Wire Experiment was a failed one. He is NOT the next Adam Archuleta - not even the next Adam Retatta. I have never, in 30+ years of watching football, seen a player who sucked so bad have such a loyal following who are completely blinded to his lack of ability on the field. I wish Coy luck in his future - just as long as he is not wearing a Bills jersey in it.

Simon Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Aaawwwesome post steve. I don't think Coy can make a roster this good.
Fake-Fat Sunny Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 The sad story on Coy Wire IMHO is one of poor development and implementation of him right from the start. A post above which blames TD is correct to the extent that the buck stops at the GM's office so he bears responsibility for this, but I think his primary error that he can be blamed for regarding Wire is that he chose to hire GW as HC and he made a series of mistakes with development and use of Wire (who the general skinny on is that he is quick player who put up good enough numbers at the Combine to make him a first day pick and he is a bright enough guy to perform well enough academically at Stanford, He has also demonstrated as a Bill off the field that he is a high quality guy who has given back a lot to the communities and charity). Nevertheless though he is a high quality enough guy to be made ST capt. at one point who cares about off-field stuff if you do not prove it on the field as a player. The mistakes were: 1. GW/Gray badly miscalculated in signing Jenkins to start at SS for the Bills in Wire's rookie year only to find out that this former GW D player with TN got cut by them because he had nothing left. His failure to be the player he was alleged to be by his former coaches led to an opening at SS which Wire was asked to fill. 2. Wire got the job showing a willingness to sacrifice his body tackling, but struggled a lot with pass coverage as a rookie starter which was not surprising since he never played safety at any level of organized ball. Maybe the plan to bring him along as a sub behind Jenkins might have worked but having him start at SS as a rookie was a disaster. 3. Recognizing this TD and the Bills signed first Chad Cota and then Ainsley Battle to play the role Jenkins was supposed to play. Both retired after signing with the Bills and occupying the spot through camp. Milloy became available suddenly and the Bills paid a ton to get him because Chicago and others had the cap room and opening to bid Milloy up/ Wire was sort of adrift and there was some thought of switching him to FS. However, right from the start he almost was responsible for giving up the only score in our 31-0 blanking of NE as he took an interference call on a Hail Mary in the last seconds when he had pass coverage in a mop-up role. Pass coverage remained a struggle. 4. He was then made an ST ace, but again with little focus in learning the ST game he made big errors right away. With a TD lead over CIN in the last minutes rather than simply taking the ball and trying to run out the clock whatever his name was who was a buddy of GWs and ST coach recommended to GW we send Wire in on a punt block. GW stupidly agreed. He not only took an angle which Tasker said later was an impossible angle to block the punt given the effectiveness of the blocking, but he took an angle where when he missed the block guaranteed that he could not avoid running into the kicker as he left his feet in a futile attempt to block. I think many posters make two mistakes: 1. They do not seem to realize that ST is a key to this game and with a young QB a crucial necessity to us winning. I am pleased with JP's development but overall he was fairly Bledsoe like in effectiveness tonight. Fortunately the ST with a blocked ount and TD for Sape and the D with a super INT by Greer giving JP and the O a short field and the D pulling a 3 and out on Indy after a turnover and then the dumb luck of Vandy missing a chip shot is why we won the game. Spending money on ST is not optional for the Bills but a necessity. 2. Tasker is the standard all ST players and particularly Bills should shoot for. However. Tasker did not walk onto the field as an ST player who will probably be the first ST player in the HOF. It took years of training and the huge ST focus Marv allowed him to have. Wire never had the training (that now April is providing), the focus (as he was distracted by trying to be a starter) or the time to be all he might be on ST. The punt block is far from the only time Wire screwed up on ST as he sometimes took bad angles and simply missed tackles on ST (such a return by Santana Moss against the ST Wire'ssecond year which saw him and Stephenson both badly miss tackles against a good player. Fortunately Proleaux both stayed in his lane and also had the speed to chase down Moss though he had to come all the way across the field from his responsibility. The issue for the Bills though is that when one looks on the depth chart, the direct competition for the back-up SS slot is actually Marvin Ward. If Leonhard is going to take the slot he will have to make the jump from 3rd string FS to SS. This can be done as the the two safety slots are used in a fairly similar fashion in the Bills D. But we will have to see. Wire is probably a goner, but Leonhard will have to show himself in pass coverage to force him out.
Ralonzo Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 The Coy Wire Experiment was a failed one. He is NOT the next Adam Archuleta - not even the next Adam Retatta. Unfortunately, the best special teamer on the Bills roster since Tasker is Terrance McGee. I'm not talking just the kickoff returns where he was electric since he was given a shot last preseason, but as a punt gunner he's an absolute frakin' dynamo. Why unfortunate? Because he's showing signs of becoming a darn good corner as well and playing both kickoffs and punts might be overexposure. The Bills' philosophy in later rounds and UDFA signings has yielded an embarrassment of ST riches. Mid rounders like Crowell and McGee and Wire, late rounders like Smith and Haggan, FA's like Peters and Stamer and Burns. Toss in your premium players for occasional duty like Parrish and Clements, and I'd say: even losing Prioleau AND Burns AND Wire we have more than enough ST demons to choose from to maintain, if not improve on last years ST dominance. I won't worry at all if OBD cuts ties with 'teamers that truly have no hope of ever developing into roster depth (Prioleau, Wire and Burns).
