since it appears that we have many QB coaches frequenting TSW and commenting on whether or not JP has "poor footwork," i thought i would offer the following:

great QBs make plays. period. i can't even begin to count the number of times i've seen very good QBs in this league make incredible plays while "throwing off the wrong foot" or using "poor mechanics" -- i think brett favre has made a living out of it.

people get caught up in QB mechanics, but the bottom line is getting the job done. JP got it done in college, and if sam wyche/mike mularkey/tom clement thought there was some sort of flaw in his mechanics that would prevent him from being successful at this level don't you think they would have done something about it by now?

if JP can make plays, we'll be happy. if he can't, we won't. and that's the last opinion i'll offer concerning "mechanics" and "footwork."

I think good mechanics for a QB is somewhat analogous to good mechanics in a golf swing.

Any halfway decent hack can hit the occasional good/great golf shot. Someone very athletic can become competent hitting the ball w/ poor mechanics. But occassionally, those poor mechanics will result in terrible shots, whereas solid mechanics will not as easily result in such a total failure.

If you take a QB w/ 'poor footwork'. Typically, I'll bet they still exibit proper technique probably 50% or more of the time (often when not pressured). Because these guys are so athletically gifted (& trained through many repetitions), even using poor technique, probably 80-90% of the time, the results will be fine. The issue is w/ those perhaps 5-10% of the throws where something is wrong.

eball,

Speaking as someone who posted on JP's mechanics at camp -- I have to somewhat disagree with you. Yes - JP got it done in college, but the NFL is a different game -- especially for QB's.

While my opinion does not mean as much as wyche's, etc -- I do know that good mechanics usually translates into good qb play. If you make a throw off your back foot and without a follow-through (as is the case with many rookie/inexperienced nfl qb's when pressured) -- it will mean less velocity & accuracy. With the speed of nfl db's this is a very bad thing.

I think this is something that will be directly accountable for a few picks by JPL this year. I know it is something wyche will obviously work on with him, and I think JPL will become a very good qb for us, but mechanics do mean alot for qb's. Oh -- and your example of brett farve -- watch some replays of his performance in last year's playoof game against the vikes -- he thre like 3 interceptions all directly related to bad mechanics.

sorry to rant -- but this is something that I saw and feel is important to jp's development. I also have the utmost confidence in wyche and mularkey to develop JPL.

i appreciate your comments, nole...and don't disagree with you at all. my point is mainly that you don't want to take a play-making QB and have him worrying about mechanics when he's on the field. i have confidence that our coaches wouldn't let "horrible" mechanics go unaccounted for.

15 minutes to the scrimmage!
