August Movies: Dukes & Grimm close out Summer

Recommended Posts

The Summer movie season comes to a close this month. While Star Wars Episode III, Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, Fantastic 4, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory & Wedding Crashers have produced big numbers, the other films of summer were not able to keep the box office numbers up from last year.

Now in the month of August a bunch of smaller films try to bring back life into the box office world.

Leading off the month is "The Dukes of Hazzard", which might be the last big summer movie. Johnny Knoxville, Sean William Scott & Jessica Simpson step into the main roles, while Burt Reynolds & Willie Nelson come along for the ride.

At the end of the month is Terry Gilliam's long delayed "The Brothers Grimm". The fantasy-thriller stars Matt Damon & Heath Ledger as the 2 fairy tale writing brothers, whose adventures take them to a haunted forest where little girls have been mysteriously disappearing.

Horror is in big demand with 3 different films this month.

Kate Hudson stars in the supernatural thriller "The Skeleton Key".

Rachel McAdams & Cillian Murphy star in Wes Craven's suspense thriller "Red Eye"

Nobody stars in the creature feature "The Cave".

Get ready for high octane motorcycle thrills with "Supercross", also featuring nobody worth mentioning.

There will be more sex comedies as well.

Rob Schneider returns as "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo", and Steve Carell is "The 40 year Old Virgin".

Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin, & Garrett Hedlund are "Four Brothers" who are out for revenge against the people whol killed their mother.

Finally, Disney releases their latest animated feature "Valiant", a story about heroic pigeons during World War II.

Here's the calendar and trailers, enjoy the last of summer.

All of these films sound like the same old crap being regurgitated. Why do a 'Dukes' movie? Yeah, the public clamoring for it was almost as loud as it was for the "Car 54, Where Are You?" movie.

Skeleton Key? When are we going to stop getting these 'Sixth Sense'/'The Ring' Xerox copies? I hope it bombs, just so Hollywood will be forced to actually come up w/ an idea. Unfortunately, I fear it won't, and more of these 'scary thrillers' will be mass produced.

The sequel to Deuce Bigalow????

I forgot to add one more movie for August 12, "The Great Raid". Based on the true story of the Bataan Death March in World War II. Stars Benjamin Bratt, James Franco, Joseph Fiennes, & Connie Nielsen.

Here's the trailer:  http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=trailer&id=1808404275

Now that looks like a good movie. I may actually want to go see that. Other than 'Murderball', there isn't anything out there I'm interested in seeing that I can't wait for them to be released on the premium channels.

The Cincy Enquirer gave the "Dukes" a 1 (!), and said "What happens when you expand a really stupid tv show to movie length? Brain damage, appearently.".

It was this weekend's box-office winner.

The local radio said that one review headline for the movie said:

"Cataclysmically Retarded"

It got a 1 from that review as well.

BTW, "Mad Hot Ballroom" is pretty good.

Sadly, that doesn't surprise me. They can thank Jessica Simpson for their good first week showing.

Don't worry...movie popcorn is addictive.

Whirley-Pop is much better than movie theater popcorn (or at least the same):

The secret is in the oil -- theaters use coconut oil.

I've converted a few people here to Whirley Pop in the past

Has anybody actually seen Dukes of Hazzard yet? I keep hearing bad reviews on it, saying it was midless, brain damage, blah, blah, blah. Did anyone seriously think it would win an Academy Award? With Stiffler, Knoxville and Simpson, I was under the impression it would just be mindless fun. Is it really that bad?
