Mike32282
Who didn't see this coming? The guy was a terrible negotiator. They lost everything and they could have had some dignity left if they agreed to the NHL's offer back in the spring. Goodbye Goodenow! Thanks for helping us realize how much unions suck. This truly represents one of the most boneheaded negotiating periods in human history.
Fake-Fat Sunny
It seems to me the key to the question of what happens next is the attitude and stance which replacement Saskin takes and how Bettman plays this for the NHL. If the new talk is in the confines of establishing a new partnership between the NHL and NHLPA then this baby has a chance to fly. If instead, this is mostly presented as or accepted as dancing on Goodenow's grave because the players lost then it will be much harder to make the future work. If Bettman allows this to be portrayed as a victory by him over Goodenow orthe NHL over the NHLPA then get ready the CBA will not work and we are going back to war. It makes perfect sense to me that Goodenow had to go as he represents the combat rather than the partnership too much. As far as it goes, i think he was bad for the game but served the players incredibly well during the last 10 years. For the most part, the outcome of having a salary cap and more certainty was where the players needed to end up or they were going to kill the good that laid the golden egg for them. The results of massively increasing the players' aggregate take over the last 10 years was a huge goose with tough negotiating by Goodenow and a lack of coordination among the owners allowed to make a reality. The interesting thing will be if the NHL also cuts Bettman lose. This would be great as both the avatars of combat would be gone and perhaps a partnership good fir the game would emerge. Of course he was going to take the fall for this debacle, but any hockey player over the last ten years has been banking because of him. He did vastly underestimate the owners' committment to this lockout, though.

duey
I just hope that Bettman follows and the league continues with its fresh start. Out with the old, in with the new.
Formerly Allan in MD
It doesn't matter who takes over at this point in time. The players learned a very hard lesson, which will likely be indelibly ingrained for some time. The next time around, it's unlikely they'll be so willing to blindly follow a pied piper, whether he appears "good enough" or not.

MadBuffaloDisease
Actually thank YOU Mr. Goodenow! Your short-sightedness led to the players rejecting a much higher cap that would have made it much harder for the Sabres to compete. Even though it cost a season, it was worth it. Bettman has done nothing to improve the game itself. His big thing was always the national tv contract and expanding the league for no other reason than a cash cow for the owners. Now is a perfect time for the NHL to fire him. A new start to go with the new NHL.
