Jets New Offensive Coordinator Mike Heimerdinger

There are several new coaches in the AFC East this year. A completely new staff in Miami with Nick Saban, however I am not too worried about Miami this year they win at max 6-7 games this. Also in New England it has been talked about Romeo Crennel leaving to become the head man in Cleveland and Charlie Weis leaving to become the Head Coach at Notre Dame. What hasn't been talked about too much is that the Jets have a new offensive coordiantor in former Tennessee Titans offenive coordinator and I am wondering what effect his hiring will have on the Jets' offense?

Jets fans seem to have disliked Paul Hackett almost as much as Bills fans

disliked Killdrive. I guess what I am wondering is why did Jets fans dislike Hackett and was their dislike of him justified? Also if there were major problems with the Jets offense can Heimerdinger Solve them? And Finnally If Heimerdinger solves these problems how much better can the Jets offense be? I also realize none of this matters if Chad Pennington is not healthy, except for that Quincy Carter is a pretty solid backup.

Thanks.

I think Mike Heimerdinger is the completly wrong offensive coordinator for the NYJ.

Herm Edwards likes a real conservative methodical approach. Heimerdinger brings a vertical style agrresive passing game.

Chad Penningtons strength is short dumpoff's to his backs which accounted for 134 of his 242 completions. Heimerdinger has already stated he plans to use the backs a lot less this coming season than the jets have in the past. Pennington coming off shoulder surgery, and never really having the greatest deep ball anyway in an offensive philosophy that features vertical passing well as a fan of rival team I like it.

Jets fans were hard on Hackett because he had the tendacy to call some of the worst plays. Although I think this was more playing to the strength of your team than calling bad plays. I look for the jets offense and the jets in general to take a big step back, and penningtons arm to fall off by week 6. Also Quincy Carter is no longer their backup Jay Fiedler is.

I forgot about Fiedler. Is Quincy suspended on drug violations or in rehab, what is quincy's story. Either way as much as I dispise Fiedler he should be an able backup.

Edwards has said the focus of their offense will remain the running game, and I feel Martin's skills as a receiver as well as a running back will not be ignored, despite what Heimerdinger says. Martin will be the key to their offensive success this year, I believe.

My brother is a Jets season ticket holder and this is pretty much nuts on as I tend to always watch the Jets play and discuss it with my brother. It wasn't so much that he would just call bad plays, but he always seemed to call them at the worst, most critical time; not unlike a passing play on 3rd and 1 when you just need the first down to close out the game.

I can't comment on Heimerdinger, but my brother basically would have taken anything over Hackett coming back for another year.

While Heimerdinger should be an upgrade over Hackett the Jets still have a couple of more pressing issues than whether or not to open it up a little more.

1. Pennington's arm is still a problem. The timetable of his return and the status of his recovery keeps changing. If he starts the season at less than 100%, he'll be shot by the end of the year.

2. Even if he is 100%, Pennington is more suited to a dink and dunk short range game than an air it out downfield passing game.

3. Curtis Martin has to age one of these year's doesn't he? And when running backs hit the wall it's usually quick - plus there's no Lamont Jordan behind him to step in.

4. Even with a clock management specialist, Herm Edwards still screws up clock management and now he doesn't have Hackett to blame for this anymore.

I look forward to watching this unfold during the year. A good point that is often overlooked. Martin is pretty amazing. But who will spell him?
