Astrobot Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 I wonder what position in what sport earns the most money for the least amount of effort. Sort of an ESPY for the Sports Slug. I decided that punters, making, say, $300K, will make $18,750 per game for about 6 plays per game, or about $3,000 a kick. The entire play consumes about 6 seconds, which is about 10 calories consumed. The Colts and the Pats had the punters that did the least work per game this past season. Hunter Smith kicked the ball 54 times all year and Josh Miller kicked it 56 times all year . Smith earned $ 536,800 this year, ~$10,000 a kick for 540 calories consumed, $18.50 a calorie. It gets worse. Josh Miller earned $ 1,663,000 this year, ~$29,600 a kick for 560 calories consumed, $53 a calorie. The Real Question is...Do I need a hobby, or can I wait 3 more weeks? Rayzer32 Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 How bout the DH in baseball. I know most of these guys earned their keep early on in their careers, but not a bad gig when all is said and done.
Astrobot Posted July 17, 2005 Author Posted July 17, 2005 Ooompapamowmow, I thought about the DH first, actually. But a DH's season is longer by at least ten dozen, and his caloric effort (swinging the bat approx. 24 times per game) is higher.
/dev/null Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 in the words of the immortal John McLaughlin....WRONG!!! the position that earns the most money for least effort is in fact... Brett Favre's backup
My Friends Call Me Tebucky Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 I'll go with a golfer that could shoot 72-72-124-109 = 377 and still pocket $20,000 at a PGA event. He has no risk of any 250 pounder physically touching him, gets to play on the world's best golf courses, picks and chooses when he wants to work, doesn't have to deal with management and contract negotiations, doesn't really need an agent, doesn't have to endure any type of training camp whatsoever, and makes some solid money on the side just by wearing a Titleist or Taylor Made baseball cap on the course even though he'll never be on TV...
stevestojan Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 The guy responsible for filling the gas tank in a NASCAR pit crew. I mean, the guys who change the tires have to be quick, accurate, and have some sort of stength. I wonder how much the gas guy makes.
Albany,n.y. Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Backup QB for the KC Chiefs. Todd Collins has made millions of dollars watching games the past 7 seasons. The only other player who comes to mind as pocketing $ for watching games is the NFL's all time "Mr. Inactive" Victor Allotey, who also was a member (I couldn't say also played with) both the Bills & KC.
SilverNRed Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Closer for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. What is that? Like 10 save opportunities a year? And no one cares anyway.....
C.Biscuit97 Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 This is a great post... my friends and I have had many discussions on this... Long snapper, 3rd string QB and left-handed specialist relief pitcher(Jesse Orsco pitched 65 years) are some of my favorites.

gmac17 Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 the gas guy at NASCAR probably makes $60k, so it's not that much money per action compared to a punter. The wall st. journal had a thing about ex college football players being tire guys in NASCAR, and that's about what they make.
Astrobot Posted July 17, 2005 Author Posted July 17, 2005 Does anybody actually know how many times this $60K gas guy would have to pump gas for that kind of money?? We just might HAVE a winner there.

A punter is a very good nominee, but the gas guy in NASCAR still beats it, in my opinion.
JimBob2232 Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 Of course, this is assuming we can agree nascar is a sport...But I think we forgot about Peter McNeeley... 1 milion dollars for 89 seconds of "work". Or maybe it goes to tyson for the same fight...25 mil for 89 seconds of work...though he worked harder, I dont know that he worked 25 times harder.
JimBob2232 Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 Or maybe its a yankee SP...Start one game, get hurt, go on DL...pass go and collect 10 million.
swede316 Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 Me personally...If I had a choice of any one of all the above mentioned....3rd string QB by far. Watch games for free...and get paid. Think of all the cheerleaders you could pick up during the game plus a mid 6 figure income. Sweet!

There is work involved other than on Sundays.
JoeF Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 The argument I would have against the NASCAR crew is that they are support to the athlete, not the athlete on the field of play. The pits are like the sidelines. So you could say the crew that follows Lance Armstrong in a car passing water, changing spokes on the fly and probably making more than $60K for a summer of races has an easy job. So if we go with the field of play athlete, a couple of NFL teams still have kickoff specialists...no pressure of placements--just kick the ball deep after the team scores and collect vet min. A punter actually has to field a snap...kickoff specialst..kicks off a tee.
BigdaddyinOrlando Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 All the aforemetioned jobs are good but I think the topper might be Tigers' caddy Steve Williams. I know caddies earn thier money but when hump a bag for Tiger and make 10% plus when he wins and only do it for maybe 20 weeks a year and pretty much a gaurenteed paycheck, plus get to look over Tigers wife, a pretty good gig in my book!!!!
