That particular day is indicative of the French uber-Hotpocket mentality. Just a decade or two later, they allowed a Corsican Corporal to proclaim himself Emperor of the French.

Proves the superiority of the thinkers on OUR side of the pond

Napoleon was in fact a general. You're confusing him with Hitler.

And after Robespierre and the Jacobins, can you really blame them for wanting anyone else in power?

That I am.

Robespierre was a creature of their own making as well.

Doesn't mean that after a year they didn't say "Oh sh--, what'd we do?" and start praying for alternatives...

Just making the point that the French have a HISTORIC penchant for choosing horrible leaders.

TERRORISM ALERT IN FRANCE

The AP and UPI reported that the French government announced yesterday that it had raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide".

The only two higher levels in France are, "Surrender" and "Collaborate".

The raise was precipitated by a recent fire which destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively disabling their military.

Napoleon was in fact crowned Emperor Dec. 2, 1804,

or more precisely crowned himself, and was often

referred to as the "Little Corporal" or ""Petit Caporal"

as a nickname from his troops.

Reading this thread brings back memories of years ago in Aust. when everyone used to say the same thing about the Italians, then it was the Irish. Then when I moved to the USA it was Poland.

Does every generation have its particular country to ridicule?

Though "suburban Bostonians" is pretty good, I've found...

That only works on the poor folks who live in Northern Rhode Island.

Those of us in the southwestern part of the state are of course immune to such petty displays of jealousy.

Of course you are.  You're too busy indulging your Connecticut envy...

I spend enough time at work in Connecticut (and Virginia) to cure me of any such foolishness.

I do retain a nostalgic longing for WNY however.

Connecticut is fantastic! However I need to say the coast of Rhode Island is much funner. Block Island-Wakefield-Narrangasett-South Kingston, etc, etc, up to Providence-as fun as any other town!
