Well, our house in Phoenix appraises at around 300k, but we owe 260. The RE market in Buffalo is VERY affordable compared to the skyrocketing RE here in Phoenix or Southern Cal. Phx is getting as crowded as LA, and as rude. I would trade the heat for the cold if I could.

My biggest problem is finding jobs comparable to what we make at Costco. Together we make around 80-85k a year. Cant start fresh with a company and make anywhere near that much in Buffalo. Not doing the type of work we do. Now I know we wouldn't need to make that much if the overall cost of living is lower. You know, the gallon of milk or gas. The Electric bill. the Heating bill in WNY. How do they compare? When we come back for the Dolphin game, we are going to seriously check it out. I have begun checking some want ads already.

Who knows?

Like FFS said. All of our families are here in Phx. As are our friends. Why move? Is the traffic and congestion and overcrowding worth the hassle of starting over? I ask myself that everday when I am sitting in traffic in 110* heat.

I'd move back to Buffalo if I could find a decent job there. I'm pretty sick of California. Too much for houses in San Francisco and it keeps going up. The average price is close to 600k and you get a piece of crap house for that. Traffic is terrible, and is going to get worse every year. There are a lot of people here that look down on people that live in places like Buffalo, but they are kidding themselves.

I really love to move back also. I'm a CDL driver so I'm pretty sure I could get a job there but my wife still wants to work and unless the economy changes we won't go. They (Mayor, Gov Pataki) are now putting a board together for pending waterfront projects of 300 million dollars but these guys drag their feet each and everytime. It never changes and it never gets done.

The Wife has made noises about us exploring the possibilities of moving to the Buffalo area, and has gone so far as checking real estate prices and checking the want ads.

I say its a pipe dream really, but I was wondering what the job markets are really like. We make decent money here in Phoenix for Costco, and I dont really want to live in a double-wide if I can help it. The R.E. taxes are INCREDIBLE in WNY. Why are they so high? We pay $1600 a year in phx for a 4 br, 2 ba, 2000 sq ft house. In WNY the taxes range from 3500 to 7000. That is OURAGEOUS. It sucks to be you guys...

Oh well. If you guys have any advice, or any links to relocation sites. I would appreciate it. I would love to move back if it all works out. Season tickets to Bills and Sabres!!!!

Buffalo is undoubtedly a great place to raise a family. I would love to stay in the region and raise my kids here when that day comes but unless I personally run for county executive and take control of this giant mess we have, I don't think this area is ever going to recover economicly.

As for the taxes, at the end of the day, it will even out. I think you get more bang for your buck in Buffalo. A $200,000 house in Buffalo would cost about $550,000 to $700,000 in Phoenix.

There are some real bargains to be had in the housing market.  Depending on what you want.  You can find a real nice house in the city for under $75K.  Just don't expect the value to increase anytime soon.

True. I just bought a place in South Buffalo for $60k. It literally needs NOTHING! My taxes will be about $1500, if it were West Seneca it would be about $3000. If you don't mind putting a little elbow grease (sometimes) into a home there's a lot of decent places between $50 and $75 in Buffalo.

If you OR your wife is doing something for Costco nationally that can be dome from anywhere so you can transfer yourself and keep even one job this may be worth doing. I suspect that your Costco work is directly linked to your local farnchise and while you might work to get a job or two in a local Costco and have a shot at making this happen, the new job would have WNY pay and be lower than what you get in AZ and the exchange is a wash at best.

However, I think the Golden Nugget is to get a salary which is set by national job market competition or that of a higher salaried locality (for me I am competing against what a DC-based employee would demand for consulting services and thus I am able to offer the same service at a lower price because despite the taxes, housing and other costs of living are much lower here in Buffalo.

I doubt you can both transfer easily and keep the same salary within Costco, but if one of you can do this (either within Costco or with a competitor) it may well provide you with a base that allows the other partner to try to create their own deal here.

Despite the whining about the economy and taxes there are jobs here (though less than in the go-go Sunbelt) and  you woukd think from all the bitching that folks do that its tough here vis-a-vis government services. It definitely appears tougher here than other places in America, but this still America and it really is not that tough.  Look, its tough living in Baghdad (though people still seem to do it, get married, raise their kids, laugh with their buds etc), its tough living in Darfur (judging from the biased incomplete news coverage it is true their ain't much laughing in a refuggee camp.

However, even if it is easier to make ends meet in FLA (if you don't mind the hurricanes) than in WNY it is not tough here at all. There is a combination of what someone called above the "grass is always greener elsewhere" view and the woe as me complaining we humans tend to do, however, we Americans do not seem to realize how lucky we have it and that life here is not tough at all.  In some ways your taking the leap andleaving AZ to come home may be impossible, but it actually is impossible because we Americans are risk averse and choose not to leave our hime computer or Barcalounger and take a risk rather than it being improssible to do economically.

If making a living and risking an IED to line-up in Baghdad for a job is something that can be done, it is hard to argue that it is somehow impossible to move from AZ to WNY. It is not a fair comparison to put the AZ-WNY move up against living in Iraq, but this is not a fair comparison because it is so much harder and worse taking economic risks that can get you killed in the rest of the world than merely taking risk to be inconvenienced economically in exchange for the lack of traffic jams and easy accessibility of WNY that these two things are not comparable because it is so easy here.

The bottom-line is that there are three general suggestions for jobs here versus AZ-

1. If you work with a national company in AZ know your own goals and then look hard if there is away to retain national pay for one of you to provide a reasonable jumping off point for a move.

2. The internet and modern telecommunications makes it possible like never before to live here in Buffalo but sell your services in a national market with nationally competitive salaries. Competing in a national job marketplace is not easy, but the rate limiting factor is that most Americans choose not to do this because it can be done.  The key is to know your own goals (your assets and limitations) and to do what you want to do that you can do.

3. There are not as many higher paying jobs here as in the Sunbelt but there are good jobs here.  However, their are overpaid or incompetent people here the same as anyplace else. If you know your goals it takes more time here to fulfill them (and good luck anywhere) but this is also a viable option anywhere in America if you are willing to work even somewhat hard.

Good luck and welcome home to WNY if it works (or even if does not, the social safety net in America is not as generous as in Canada or other industrialized nations generally but it is an impressive thing if you luck is bad).

My wife and I help contribute to your salary. We are in the Costco in Miami every weekend. We love it.

I would love to move back to Buffalo if the right opportunity came along. My family still lives there. I also would love my son to have the same kind of childhood as I had.

Unfortunately, I do not think that I will be able to move back anytime soon.

Funny thread... I was just thinking about the good old days in WNY at the drive-in theaters.  Most of my family is heading south which keeps me from heading back. I keep hoping WNY turns the corner and they lose the morons in local government...

That's funny. I was just back in town for a stag party and was down in Angola

raising hell and there is an old drive-in next to the Jubilee on 5. Got thinking about the Wherle Drive-In in Clarence. Soft pron on Friday nights, Talas concerts, dollar parties. Man, I wouldn't trade growing up in WNY for nothing!

The wife and I looked into it when I still worked for EDS and before we had our little girl.

It would have been MUCh cheaper for us to leave this sh---hole and move to Buffalo, but our concern was her finding a teaching job up there. From what I understand, it's difficult to transfer a teaching cert from PA to NY.

We were looking at houses in E. Aurora, Hamburg, Silvercreek and elsewhere and EVERYTHING was cheap compared to here where you'll easily pay 275k for a 1400 SF twin.
