I used to follow the Patriots board in the Tom Brady years

Guess what was the biggest  complaint with the fans every off season?

You Guess it, the lack of Quality Wide Receivers.

He’s exactly right.  And saying “let me finish!” when nobody was interrupting him.

Beane sounded shook not confident.

Also despite his protestations to the contrary - that he would have drafted whoever was top of his board - he kinda gave himself away bit with "I didn't feel we fell short because of offense we needed defense."

I mean he isn't wrong we needed defense. That McDermott-Frazier D is almost totally dismantled. There is only really Taron and Milano and Ed hanging on who were mainstays of that era. Last year felt like an in between D. Hopefully we just drafted some mainstays of the next era.

Of course it would!  Nobody, including Beane, disagrees with that.  The problem is the incessant criticism of Beane as if he is consciously ignoring it, rather than understanding he has to build an entire football team and make decisions that often sacrifice one need for another.

We can debate whether a speed receiver or a better D line is more important.  That’s fine.  What’s ridiculous — in my opinion — is somehow suggesting Beane is an idiot for not going the way some want him to go.

This is exactly the point.

The Bills currently have the best QB in the NFL (or close to it), one of the best O-Lines in football and a Top 5-10 running back room.  Yes, we could stand to upgrade the WR corps.  Beane said so himself.  But it's not like he's completely ignored that aspect of the team.  Our top draft picks in 2023-2024 were both pass catchers, and our top free agents the last two offseasons were also receivers.

This offense finished #1 in scoring last year, with very close to the same group of WRs.  In the playoff loss against Kansas City, our offense scored 29 points against a team that only allowed an average of 19 during the season.  They did very good against one of the best units in the NFL.

On the other side, our defense allowed Kansas City to have its best scoring game of the entire season.  They once again struggled to get pressure, cover receivers and make third-down stops.  It could be argued that we allowed the Chiefs to have their best games during 2023 and 2021 as well... and for the exact same reasons.  They have played poorly against a group that has been mediocre against almost everyone else.

At this point, it should be painfully clear what is holding the Bills back from taking the next step.

And when Brady finally had a chance to go where he wanted, which receivers did he decide to go play with?

Props for posting this even though it goes against your anti-Beane/pro-WR "crusade".

I havent seen anyone in the mass media not siding with Beane on this.

I’ll call you out for accusing him of crusading.  It’s an ironic accusation given that your recent iteration of being a poster seems to be the anti-fan cynic - you exist mainly to complain about other fans of late.

Of course they’re going to side with Beane,  the big media talking heads want him on their show, not likely they side with Jeremy whoever to get him on lol

And how many Supetbowls did Tom Brady win in New England?

Maybe I'm just a contrarian, but the argument from authority is weak, especially when the mass media is the authority, imo.

I notice a lot of straw men being trotted out. You don't have to decide between investing heavily in the defense and adding a speed outside WR. Beane could have done both, but he decided depth for the D or for niche positions like blocking TE (he got a good one) and developmental OL always had better priority on his board on Day 3. The board was set according to the habitual MO of the Bills. It was a very Bills' draft.

I’m pro Beane, I love our draft, Beane has done awesome job constructing Bills machine, he has possibly the greatest QB in history, and he has woefully neglected the Wide Receiver room.  All statements are true

It was a very light accusation, hence the quotes. But bro, check the front page. Our guy has multiple threads and polls going. But I was genuinely respecting his post because I generally like @Pete even if I'm disagreeing with him or sick of his WR posts.

Just like I'll put air quotes around you "white knighting" for Pete.

And yeah, I'll call fans out for getting all hot and bothered and hating on our own players and staff over practically nothing.

Beane getting defensive like that sounds like he knows he f'ed up.

I mean, he traded a 3rd for Amari Cooper mid-year after everyone said they didn't have the WRs to compete.  Then they let Amari walk, let Mack walk and only signed Josh Palmer? How can he say the WR room is better with a straight face??

Keon will grow. Kincaid hopefully is healthy. Shakir gets one more year under his belt, but the Samuel signing was a bust and Palmer has not exactly proven himself as a #1 or even a #2.  Beane basically said, we have Josh to prop us up forever, so we'll be fine.  It's a really limited take. You need to get better on both sides of the ball each year. Offense has stagnated or gone backwards as far as talent and now with Cook potentially holding out, while all the young D studs ate, it just shows a bias toward not supporting Josh fully and having him shoulder the load.

Ehh, I've seen the media rally around their own before.

I find the wr obsession here and wgr odd and ignorant also.

All the people that wanted wr so bad were elated for giving up a third round pick for cooper last fall.  I hated it then and now.  I got crushed here for hating the cooper trade.

i hope they never do anything like that again.

I hope they do that kind of thing every single year, should the situation present itself. Draft picks are wildly overvalued compared to proven talent.

A perennial playoff team should almost always be looking to load up on pieces at the deadline that they think can help them in their playoff push. At this stage of our roster development, we have no holes. We have places we can get better, places we can get deeper, and places where we can get cheaper, but if you claim the goal is to win the Super Bowl this year, next year's 90th pick doesn't help you do that.
