I was thinking the same thing. They were literally using an offensive lineman for this exact role just last year. How could anybody be upset about using a 5th round comp pick on an actual TE who can do it.

I don’t expect much myself but I feel like we collectively forgot about him already. 

 

 

I feel as though if Shenault is making the roster, it's bc they're keeping him as a Special Teams Returner. When we do that, we tend to keep them as an extra player to the normal number. We carried 6 WR's and 5 CB's before Codrington took the role. Then it switched when a "CB" became our Returner.

Can say I'm a huge fan but on day 3 you are looking at people who can make you're team and TE3 gives us a best shot at not wasting a pick

Yes, the video above says “Georgia Tech basically used him as an extra Tackle”. That was the first thing I thought of. 

 

EDIT: He’s not the first guy we drafted where NFL.COM said his tape was better from 2023. I don’t know what that means, if anything. 🤷‍♂️

Hawes was my most mocked TE to the Bills... That's mostly because I never mocked a TE to the Bills till the 6th or 7th Rd. And I knew the Bills are looking for a 3rd TE that can block... And that is Hawes game... It's pretty much all he does, but he does it really, really well...

 

Hawes is and older prospect and will turn 25 in December... He's a very average athlete overall with good explosive numbers and average speed. He's a 7.23 RAS overall...

Blocking... That's it... Blocking and more blocking...

A one-year starter at Georgia Tech, Hawes was an inline tight end in offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner’s run-heavy scheme (65.0 percent of snaps inline, 28.3 percent in the slot). He spent five years at Yale and picked up an Ivy League degree before spending his final college season with the Yellow Jackets in 2024. His performance at Georgia Tech earned him draftable grades from NFL teams.

 

As a pass catcher, Hawes tracks and catches the ball well, but he wasn’t a high-volume target in college — that is reflected in his inefficient route running and choppy attempts to separate at the stem. Where he shines is as a versatile, throwback blocker who can dig out defenders and stay between his target and the football. Overall, Hawes is a one-speed athlete and has a low ceiling as a passing target, but his functional athleticism, technical approach and competitive attitude should be enough to keep him on an NFL roster. He is a classic Y tight end prospect.

 

Note:  Bills just drafted the Ivy League Lee Smith ...

Yet after 18 games they still did their job against the defending two time champs. The other side of the ball was a vastly different story, which is they lost that game and why they’re throwing as much as they possible can at the defense between free agency and the draft.

 

Josh just won the MVP with that system. 
You expecting some precipitous fall off after almost two years in Brady’s offense doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Not  “precipitous” but enough to lose us enough close games to matter.

 

Day 3 flyers for actual competition in a room that’s largely responsible for most of your points isn’t a big ask.
