Today I am hoping, and thinking, more defense, to finish the job the Bills have started and make the defensive make over, which is vital, more complete.

No real depth now at corner, as no one who saw either guy play last year should be relaxed and confident if White or Jackson had to step in and play a game or two or more (or less).  No one.  Hopefully someone in the Bills' brain trust is banging this same drum now, persuading the Bills to get the best corner available--and using their draft capital to do so.

And ditto for defensive tackle. Daquan Jones should never start another game for the Bills, as at 34 he took a giant step back last year. At least one more defensive tackle is just as needed still as another corner. A potential starter and depth, maybe the huge guy they don't have yet. So we never again have to hear the discouraging words, "The Bills have resigned...Quinton Jefferson, Jordan Phillips, Eli Ankou,  and any Johnson..."  ever again.

If the Bills parlay all of their 6-7-? day 3 picks into these two players, almost everyone will be pleased by the results next year--a defense more capable of going toe to toe with the top teams in the NFL, and finally giving the best quarterback in the league the defense he needs to drive the Bills home.

The Bills gave Josh the running game he needed over the last few years AD (after dorsey), focusing like a laser on the O-line and backs, and that should be even better this year, used more.  And a now a new defense will be the final step.

If the Bills are successful in finishing the job today it helps the offense too, and not just in the complimentary football manner. The Bills will find themselves with a bunch of new defensive starters (and backups) this year and next, at a very low price, so can then much more easily re-sign the offensive lineman and others needed to sustain and increase their success. They will likely be able to jettison dead weight on defense this off season too, freeing up serious $ now.

The Bills are doing what the Chiefs did so well a few years ago before they won their two Super Bowls, and even more directly, doing what the Eagles did last off season-- taking one of the worst defenses in the NFL and transforming it over night into one of the best. But more to do. Saturday is vital in finishing the job.

The most important remaining need is a field stretching WR. There isn’t a close 2nd. Giving Josh Allen someone that can stretch the field vertically not just adds big plays, it opens up the underneath for Kincaid and Shakir. It gets safeties away from the LOS to help the running game. I think that the stat was the Bills saw the most (or at least top 5 most) loaded boxes in the NFL last year. That’s impossible with Josh Allen as your QB. That’s malpractice by the organization. Palmer should help some but it’s the biggest need by 40 miles.

We have 3.5 Wide Receivers right now.

Shakir

Coleman

Palmer

Samuel, when he’s not hurt

It would be malpractice to not get Josh Allen a speed WR

That said.. and I know this won’t be loved by some.. if we know Bond is going to slide due to off the field, I’d be fine taking Defense early today and then taking Bond as WR5.

Yes I agree. Anyone that thinks we should just go all defense without getting a speedy WR isn’t paying attention. Allen has no deep threat at this point and that takes the bazooka out of the game plan. We need that dynamic. Go get a WR with the first pick today, then the defense crowd can have their way the rest of the draft for all I’m concerned.

If there is a high value wideout available, one much more highly rated than a corner or d tackle, I would take him too.

But to say that wideout is the 'biggest need by 40 miles' does not make sense, with the highest scoring offense in the entire league last year, best in Bills history, I believe, where all key players are returning,  and where it seems they have also upgraded at wideout already.

The defense, on the other hand, was one of the worst in the NFL last year on 3rd down efficiency, quarterback completion percentage. So those areas are clearly more vital to fix by any objective standard.

shocked Jalen Royals is still out there. There’s something about that kid.
Horton is nice also. I’m going to assume somebody picked up Felton because I don’t hear anybody talking about him as an option. Thornton is more of a project but I would love to grab him also.

You can only dress so many players but I’m loving the focus on the defensive line. Let’s trade up and get a couple more talented kids and call it good.

All key players are returning?  Ummm…didn’t Mack hollins lead the team in receiving tds?  He’s gone. Like it or not, speedy WR would open a lot of things up for this offense and keep defenses honest so we can utilize Allen’s arm. I completely and vehemently disagree with you that we should double on corner and d tackle before we address this need.

Keep an eye on Ayomanor.

I don't know if the value will be there to just keep going defense although if it was I would be cool with it. Lots of wide receivers still sticking out pretty strongly.

We just spent the bulk of FA and the prime day 1 and 2 draft picks on defense, and let's keep going and ignore WR? Terrible.

Trade up from 132 and get someone like Horton, Royals, or Ayomanor. You might be able to wait at 132 for Thornton, I dunno, but take one and make Josh Allen's job easier, and just be decent about the other side of the ball, McBeane.

I completely agree with you, it will be about value, like I said in my response to the first reaction.

It is a sport, after all, and there will be many variables today, many unforeseen.

But so far they are doing what I was praying they did, revamping the defense. And I want more!

Yea you can use 132 and one of the 5th and that gets your roughly to 118ish. I think if there is a run on WRs you might see this.

Two of our fifths along with the 4th get us all the way up to the giants pick (3rd in round 4). That guarantees us one of the top WRs left….this is going to be the most stressful round of the draft for me lol.

What do you believe is more important: someone that will play 20 snaps a game to keep the safeties deep or someone that will compete with Dane Jackson & J’Marcus Ingram for the 4th outside corner? It’s a rhetorical question.

They were an offense built on scheme and Josh. The Ravens in the first game openly said that they just pushed the LOS and jammed the middle of the field. The Bills immediately traded for Cooper to make teams at least respect them down the field. He’s gone. 40 miles might be an understatement. There’s nuance to this. The Bills scoring a lot of points doesn’t mean that they have good pass catchers. They’re a bottom 5ish WR group. Shakir is the only above average player in the room. He’s a top 30ish WR.

We need to stop looking at a stat sheet to tell the story. The defense sucked. The talent sucked. The depth has been, and will be, fine. They were slow. That’s been addressed. Filling out the back of the defensive roster without getting help for the most important player to ever wear a Bills uniform is criminal. IF the Bills are ever going to win a Super Bowl, it’ll be BECAUSE OF Josh Allen, not because of their 5th CB or 5Th DT. 🤣🤣 opening up the entire playbook for him >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> more defensive depth

How far up can we get using all three of our 5ths while still keeping our original 4th?

Got picked with the final pick in the 3rd by Minnesota.

I agree. Once the run starts, the viable options will go quick. WR with speed is a definite need that so many on here completely ignore. If we don’t come away with a decent option, it will most likely show up sometime in the season like it did last year.
