I think he's drafted pretty well at DT.  Who don't you like?

Expand

I fully support beane but not sure about drafting DT.  When they took Oliver there are many other DTs who have been better who were taken after him.  We will see about sanders and Carter in time.

Maybe you can help me then. My wife doesn’t understand why teams would trade down to allow another team to draft in their place. I mean, who doesn’t get trading 45, 67, 109 and 233 for 41, 63, 145 and 237?  Fortunately, she was smart enough to marry yours truly.

The only thing I can suggest is to play Monty Python's Life of Brian, and buy her a bottle of wine.

I'm not afraid of a 290 pound DT.  Nolen had really high grades both rushing the passer and as a run stopper.  Sanders is not Nolen.  The fear (my fear) is that he's the exact same guy we traded up for last year.  From now until he shows up in a game and plays better than Carter I'm going to wonder why we take pass rushing 3techs  who at the end of the season have a sack maybe two more than the UDFA guy we picked up off waivers to stop the run because we are getting owned by the Ravens or Colts.

the most promising thing is that the scouting reports indicate he is not elite at either, but also has bad form.  If they can fix the form (pad level, etc) he could be an all-around stud.  But it seems like a gamble for sure.

62 and 56 we were likely to get skutz. So im ok we gambled on a need.  Elite at this juncture isn’t a thing! At this pt most have warts!

Yeah well the clear analysis is struggles with double teams and not great against the run

Show me where anyone said not great against the run? I don't mean somebodies touchy Uncle. Not a local news guy making $31k/year.

Show me one scouting website or legit mock draft site. You won't find it. Because nobody says this.

I wasn't thrilled with trade up, but 9ers DL is in same boat as us. If it's the guy we had targeted, I'd prefer to trade up (the only way need and BPA overlap).

Also we went up 15 spots, and only went back 10 spots from the 2nd. Other than that we used the exact draft capital were supposed to maneuver with

Um. Wait? You liked the drought yrs, where we won the draft every year? Beane sgets credit for 65% win rate. 70% if HC didn’t brain cramp in playoffs

I'm not sure slamming a pick before he even plays a down is a winning argument either.

Argue the pros and cons of trading extra capital for a player who the best reasonable expectation is “rotational piece” on defense.

A winning argument for bad strategy isn’t “what if it works out this time.”

Not at all what I said.

You need to read what I wrote and not interpret meaning.

I'll repeat....we need to be better on 3rd down, our pass rush and quick underneath passing Defense was BAD LY.  Max helps with quick underneath, now we're trying to get after the QB.  How is this a bad strategy?

My stupid analogy is 1T will leave you only 1 T-bone steak at the BBQ, he's the biggest guy who eats the most.  3T is still a big guy but eats less and will leave you a couple more T-bone steaks, he's a bit more lean and nimble.

Why would I do that?

Sounds like it takes some effort.  I don't know anything - like everyone else here.  I'd prefer to let things play out and criticize a pick after it turns out that they are worthy of criticism.

Which isn't anytime before they play a down of professional football.

This is my feeling, except I think Collins has a higher floor. Time will tell.

Every single DL is a rotational piece.

It's not a pejorative term

Fun fact. His listed weight is closer to 300 than 290.

This guy could be good, but this is a reflection of McDermotts defensive philosophy.  Smaller mobile DTs.  Teams can run you over.

Expand

It's becoming more clear as each season goes by that McDermott wants quickness and versatility, and he believes that he can get those smaller guys to rise to the challenge on running downs.  I think it's McDermott's wrestling mentality.  I think his belief is that it's tougher to find big guys with the quickness and versatility he wants, than it is to find smaller quick guys who are tough enough to win against big power lines.

I have trouble seeing how his view actually is a better approach to defensive line plane, but McDermott has reasons that I'm sure at least make sense.

It's almost as though the plan is to fill the tackle room with 3Ts and have them compete. The two winners make the team as 3Ts, the next two guys get the 1T spots and agree to play the position as well as they can. I don't know.
