This guy could be good, but this is a reflection of McDermotts defensive philosophy.  Smaller mobile DTs.  Teams can run you over.

It's becoming more clear as each season goes by that McDermott wants quickness and versatility, and he believes that he can get those smaller guys to rise to the challenge on running downs.  I think it's McDermott's wrestling mentality.  I think his belief is that it's tougher to find big guys with the quickness and versatility he wants, than it is to find smaller quick guys who are tough enough to win against big power lines.

I have trouble seeing how his view actually is a better approach to defensive line plane, but McDermott has reasons that I'm sure at least make sense.

It's almost as though the plan is to fill the tackle room with 3Ts and have them compete. The two winners make the team as 3Ts, the next two guys get the 1T spots and agree to play the position as well as they can. I don't know.

Not at all what I said.

You need to read what I wrote and not interpret meaning.

I'll repeat....we need to be better on 3rd down, our pass rush and quick underneath passing Defense was BAD LY.  Max helps with quick underneath, now we're trying to get after the QB.  How is this a bad strategy?

ultimately either this two can play or they can’t.

if they can, the prototype and corresponding strategy are fine. If they can’t…. Well….

I feel like this is an absolute reach. An undersized defensive lineman.

Lol staying pat we were getting ZIP!  This guy fills a need we swapped seconds dropped and picked up a third.  Not the end of the world. We can’t roster all the picks we have anyway!

Trade value charts show a pretty even trade, some a slightly higher value on the Bills side of the trade.  Whether we needed to go up or not is another point entirely.  But the trade was fine.

We are obsessed with the same type of DT. Get a guy that’s 340 lbs or don’t bother. We can never stop the run and we never win the LOS against physical point of attack teams. Stop wasting time rotating 290lb Dlineman. Get 2 monsters in there to occupy blocks and keep the LBs clean. Stop doing this FFS. How many of these guys do we need?

Sam Adams and Pat Williams please.

I'm not sure slamming a pick before he even plays a down is a winning argument either.

Sure, but on the other side of the coin this regime doesn’t really have any credibility when it comes to the DL. We never generate a pass rush in January.

Um. Wait? You liked the drought yrs, where we won the draft every year? Beane sgets credit for 65% win rate. 70% if HC didn’t brain cramp in playoffs

The only reason these aren’t the drought years is Allen- Beane lucked into a HOF qb….if not for that he would have been gone long ago, with his track record

For those of you that are saying we get manhandled upfront every year, how did Henry do in that playoff game?

he didn’t get many carries. Ravens lost the game because of it

Argue the pros and cons of trading extra capital for a player who the best reasonable expectation is “rotational piece” on defense.

Please and thanks.

To be fair though:  Any DL player we chose comes in essentially as a rotational piece, that is just how we run our DL here.  Whether that is the right or wrong way to do it is fair to question, but it is how they use them, even Ed

up 15 down 10 and used a day 3 swap to do it

our day 2 ammo ends more valuable - I’m ok

That's not the whole trade which I'm sure you know but you also seem to have missed what I was getting at which is if we'd just held til now we might've been able to just draft Alexander at 56 or move up a few spots and take him and not have to move back 10 spots from 62 at all. Some might also argue Alexander will be the better player though I'd be inclined to trust Beane on that part of it.

You don’t know if he would or would not be there but don’t say we moved up 5 spots when it was 56 to 41 that was why we had to give up some picks / positions

but we moved back 10 and lost a 4th to go up 15 spots a lot different then what you presented

I think that's kind of the same as questioning the pick yesterday, because Elam didn't work out.

I just don't quite get the mindset on draft weekend from some fans.  If a pick is a true reach or something, I'd kind of get it - or if a trade is wildly lopsided or unnecessary (i.e. the trade for Sammy Watkins).  But this is a pick where the guy was picked around where people thought he'd go, and we got a pretty fair trade to get him.
