The Bills had a clear need at defensive tackle heading into the draft, and sensing a drop-off coming at defensive tackle after a couple of names were taken, the Bills instead vaulted up the board for Sanders. In terms of what the Bills are looking for out of the one-technique position, Sanders is perfectly suited. Sanders will likely begin as a rotational defensive tackle within their scheme and the primary backup to 33-year-old starter DaQuan Jones. However, Sanders’ versatility will help him get on the field a lot more often than if he were just a two-down, one-technique-only type. Jones was still an effective starter last year, though there was a bit of a drop-off from his playing level in the 2023 season. There is a definite opportunity for Sanders to be the starter by the end of 2025, and the long-term starter in 2026 and beyond.

 

Fast evaluation

 

This is a home run pairing for the Bills. They have someone who maintains three-down ability in a smaller package but has the length and run-defending skills they covet in a long-term starter at the position. The Bills needed a long-term replacement for Jones, who is a free agent after 2025, and they found it in Sanders.

1. He is too small - Incorrect.  
2. We gave up 2 seconds to go up 15 spots - Also incorrect.  We moved back 10 spots in regards to our other 2nd.

Substitute ‘Kiper’s Board’ for “the industry”. Beane needs to her “his guy” foe value. Shouldn’t be that hard with a guy rated where Sanders was. On many mocks. Including our hero, Joe Marino.

That's not the whole trade which I'm sure you know but you also seem to have missed what I was getting at which is if we'd just held til now we might've been able to just draft Alexander at 56 or move up a few spots and take him and not have to move back 10 spots from 62 at all. Some might also argue Alexander will be the better player though I'd be inclined to trust Beane on that part of it.

It sounds to me like this is Ed Oliver's eventual replacement, which OK I get that, but where's the monster 1-technique we need next to these guys?  Where's the 340 pound mountain?  The Bills love to have their D linemen moving around which tends toward lighter guys, but that's no help when the other guys are gashing the D for chunk plays by overpowering the DTs.

Yea.. Kiper massively underrated the DL grades in this Draft, while he was distracted by his passion project: Shadeur Sanders. 
 

Zero chance TJ Sanders lasted to 56, let alone 43, where SF likely had him lined up to draft.

Sanders led the defensive linemen at South Carolina with 50 tackles in 2024, and had sevens tackles for loss and four sacks. He logged six quarterback hurries and one pass breakup, and record at least three tackles in 9-of-13 games.

Against Ole Miss, he had seven solo tackles and in back-to-back games against Oklahoma and Texas A&M, he recorded at least two solo sacks and one sack in each game.

 

Not too bad, sounds on vs run and getting pressure.

i was a big Nolen fan. I wanted Beane to take him at 30 if he was there. I would be AGHAST if he traded this years 1 and next years 1 to get him. That’s just poor strategy.

 

It’s fine to trade up for a BTJ when you have no WR on the roster. It would be fine to trade up for Sanders if Eddy was traded. But otherwise it just seems like bad resource management especially for a player I don’t particularly like. Jmo ofc

Sanders gets us off the field, you'll quickly forget what we gave up.

 

We were like 27 or 28th in 3rd down defense last year.....again, literally everyone is trying to copy the Eagles blueprint right now.  I could careless if Sanders plays 30% of snaps, as long as he (and others) gets us off the field on 3rd down.
