Abdul Carter vs Travis Hunter (two guys the Bills have no chance to even draft)

Would like to know where the board stands on who should the Bills draft (huge if I know) if they had these two players in front of them Thursday night.

Hunter. Elite at two positions in college means double the chance to be successful at the NFL level.

Abdul Carter.

 

Part of the awe surrounding Travis Hunter is his ability to play either WR and CB.  That isn't (or at least shouldn't) be happening in the pros.  In the NFL, he will need to pick only one position and really try to perfect his craft.  Otherwise he splits his time, and risks not being great at either side.  Will he be happy focusing on just one position?  Will it be the same one his coaches want him to play?  Will there be division in the front office or coaching staff over where to play him?  Too many questions for my taste.

 

Give me the "potentially next" Micah Parsons, and don't look back.

 

As a sidebar... how hilarious is it that we basically let New England beat us in a meaningless Week 18 game, and it cost them one of the two elite prospects in this draft?  Ouch.

Similar quality prospects but I wouldn't want the headache of trying to find the right balance between playing WR and CB with Sanders.  Plus, elite DE's have a longer shelf life than elite CB's/WR's.

Both incredible players but id take an elite DE over an Elite CB/WR. Carter is a game wrecker.

Gives us immediately a #1 WR we’ve desperately lacked and he is good enough to also scoop up the corner spot opposite Benford

The pass rushing DE probably has a bit more upside if he hits,  but,  as a general rule, I also view the risk with a pass rushing DE as considerably higher than with a CB (in fact,  I view pass rushing DEs as the most difficult position to draft aside from QB).  In that sense,  given two elite prospects,  it becomes a risk management game for me.

In addition, if he does play both sides he's got double the snaps exposing him double the possibility of injury. And if he does get hurt you lose a top offensive AND too defensive weapon on your team at the same time.

 

Not to mention playing both ways will likely have him burnt out before the playoffs begin.

the flip side is at 2 or 3 are you trying to get a generational game changer or good settling for a reliable good starter? 
 

broad strokes I come to this feeling like hunter will be a good but not all pro guy…. I’ve admittedly watched less Carter but my gut leans similar to you with being a boom-bust

 

i think that high you have to swing at the upside though.

yea the guy would be playing a 40 game season if full time both ways.
 

I think you have to put him at cb and let him be a 5-10 routes type

I'm working under the assumption that we expect both to become All Pro type players at their positions.  The DE probably does have more impact,  if you hit on the pick,  but I think the CB is less risky.  But if you see Hunter as just a good CB,  then yes,  you probably should roll the dice on the upside at DE.

This would make a lot of sense.

 

If I had Hunter I would play him both ways....game plan specific. Such as say the Patriots were to get him. If I was the coach I'd play him on defense mainly that game against Allen. When we played the Jets ..don't really need him against Fields so he would be at WR and rotate in on obvious passing downs.

 

Would still have to make the opponent prepare for him on both sides of the ball too.

Hunter can absolutely play 10 offense snaps for the Bills. Not that hard.. like a special teamer. And if the Bills are that good, he doesn’t play full games hopefully. I don’t consider that as a negative in this Carter vs Hunter scenario. Actually it’s a plus for Hunter. But I still want Carter more.

Always take the elite lineman unless there’s an overriding character concern. Even with the best of the best…. Bruce/LT/Reggie or Rice/Megatron or Deion/Champ Bailey?

Its without question Carter, and its not close.  

 

DE Carter > CB Hunter

DE Carter > WR Hunter

 

Hunters appeal is he can play both positions...but that novelty has less value in the NFL.  No matter what position Hunter commits too, Carter is a better prospect at his position than Hunter is at that position.  

 

You take Carter if given the chance.  Doesn't mean Hunter isn't also one of the best prospects in the draft, but Carter is arguably the best prospect in this whole draft and has a elite potential.
