Amazing world leader.  A staunch advocate for social justice, respect for immigrants, environmental issues and the poor.  An exceptional life.  A dignified death.

Today is a sad day but I have no doubt that he is in paradise with God.

He was clearly gravely ill yesterday.  He also was obviously opposed to Vance and trump's opinions on immigrants, climate change, human rights and many other issues and yet he briefly met him in that condition...

This should be proof that even people can meet and respect the time and attention of someone who disagrees with them - still, the timing was insane.

People usually know their last days, their medical team knows their last days; the Catholic team propping up the Pope decided this was a good optic in his final days? Amazing.

The benefit for the Catholic faith and Vatican was far more than Vance. The Trump administration gained nothing from this since the Pope died minutes later and now the Vatican can completely vacate the meetings discussion that agreed to anything.

Just incredibly odd timing.

Also, eff this guy's pop culture caving of his religion to bring LBGTwhatever into mainstream church. What a disgrace.

JPII was a world leader. Went all over the world. I believe he helped free eastern Europe from the Iron Curtain. He gave the Poles the guts to stand up to the Ruskies.  If they had gone into Poland in the ;late 70s it would have been  a holy war.

A fine and decent man who came to the Vatican at the right time.

I didn't always agree with him when it comes to political issues. But when I disagreed his moral leadership caused me (and still causes me) to question where my political opinions are based more on convenience or poorly considered "necessity" rather than on Christ's teachings. I can only hope that the last days meeting with JD Vance has a profound impact.

Thought this was a very good movie:

It was refreshing to see Hollywood take the different currents in Catholic theology and doctrine seriously rather than as some purely personal or political matter.

I think I'll watch this again as the conclave convenes.

I was always frustrated with my parish for infrequently echoing some of Francis more progressive statements.  The church as a field hospital was an especially resonant metaphor. And I can’t recall it being repeated once in a homily. The American bishops were frequently not accepting of his philosophy.

Agreed.

Despite what some think around here, I'm a law and order guy. I understand fully Pope Francis' attention to the plight of the immigrant and our responsibility to care for him. I also understand that my support for tighter immigration policy during the Biden years was in conflict with that.

What I can't agree with, under any circumstances, is the deliberate humiliation and dehumanization of the immigrant. Things like gloating over photos of deported immigrants in those CECOT cells. Every Holy season the Pope met with prisoners. He didn't call for their immediate release. He just wanted to recognize their humanity. I don't believe any Christian - or anyone - should be going out of his way to degrade others, no matter what they've done to offend our laws or harm others. That is the message for me.

Pope Francis’ death has set off a centuries-old orchestrated series of events to honor his life and legacy, though the funeral for the 266th bishop of Rome will likely differ drastically from those of his predecessors.

The beloved pontiff, who died Monday at 88 following a lengthy battle with double pneumonia, made changes to his funeral rites last year that underscore his humility while ditching the traditional pomp and circumstance.

Typically, papal funerals are held four to six days after the death in St. Peter’s Square, but Francis had said that, unlike his predecessors, he would not be laid to rest in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica. Instead, he opted to be buried in Rome’s St. Mary Major Basilica.

He also chose a simple wooden casket, a far cry from his predecessors who would be laid to rest in three interlocking caskets made of cypress, lead and oak

The date of his funeral has not yet been announced.

The conclave to elect a new pope by secret ballot begins in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel between 15 and 20 days after the pope’s death.

Cardinals need at least two-thirds plus one to elect the new pope, meaning voting can take several days before a new pontiff is chosen.

He was particularly supportive of all the good the vaccine companies did for the world during the Covid Crisis. As Pfizer head Albert Bourla said:
