Some of this could also be to make the hole less glaring. With what they've done as far as pre-Draft work and visits with CB's - it's pretty obvious to teams what we're going to do. This makes it a little more ambiguous when we're on the clock. Case in point, half of the posters on here seem to think CB is off the table now.

I may not like drafting in the 1st round a CB project. It's still a need to win football games this season. They are drafting one. Where !? WHEN ?

Absolute waste of money at this point.  Our team needs to get better you don't do this by signing a Vet that was released from the team due to major injuries and has been on the decline since he was let go..  Unreal what they are smoking in their pipes at One Bills Drive.   Yeah bad move by Buffalo and for wasting money on an non impactful player...

I’m surprised frankly. I wonder if he will even be around by the end of camp. He was a liability on the field last year. This strikes me as McDermott again valuing an old head over an athlete. ( Klein over Williams) (Hyde over Cine) His reliance on slow veteran players against the best talent has not been very successful. He took Tre’s injury pretty hard a few years ago. This, while a nice story, seems like an expensive solution for cornerback depth. How is White better than Douglas, a less damaged FA, or a righteous draft pick? I know, I’m a downer.

6.8m isn't all that expensive to begin with for a CB. And anytime you hear "up to" - that's code for "not even close to what they're really being paid".

 

As for concern over who they're choosing to replacing Douglas - did you watch Rasul Douglas last season? He was truly dreadful. There's a reason we let him walk and he's still out there. He gave up a 73% completion percentage when targeted.

 

If it's Douglas or a competition between a Draft Pick, White, and Jackson - I'll take the latter all day. Douglas looked truly toast and I don't think he's going to bounce back at 31.

Or maybe it's insurance so they can take a stud DLineman at 30 then a project like Darien Porter in the 2nd plus a CB double dip on day 3. I wouldn't mind Tre mentoring in a situation like that, not one bit

Funny stuff in here with the knee jerk doomers who don't see any room for nuance or uncertainty.

 

A Tre White/Dane Jackson platoon at CB2 DOES unfortunately sound very McBeaney. Think Levi Wallace, Josh Norman, Kevin Johnson, EJ Gaines, Vontae Davis LOL, Dane Jackson et al. But there is ZERO indication that the Bills still won't add one or more prospects to the position group. They might even still spend a top-100 pick on the position. 

 

We don't even know the actual guaranteed money in Tre's deal. Maybe it's just an educated gamble, knowing the floor is a Micah Hyde-like presence in the room and on the sidelines, and the ceiling is a steady CB2 who's only 30 and now entering his 2nd year removed from major injury. Would be a bit of an overpay if he just can't play anymore, but could be a nice value if he CAN.

 

Still need at least one more viable CB2 candidate, no doubt. And that will come from the draft and post-draft process. Benford was drafted when? Johnson was drafted when? Good fits are there to be found in his draft. Rounds 2-4 appear to be loaded with potential starters.

There is no way for them to know.  What they know is that White was a two-time pro bowler.  He is a couple years removed from a devastating injury.  It's reasonable to assume that the injury was a major factor in his struggle with the Rams.  He was somewhat improved in Baltimore.  It's not outrageous to think that another season removed from the injury could bring further improvement.  Given that CB is the most obvious need heading into the draft, the very modest risk he presents is easily worth it.  Better than Rasul Douglas?  We can't be sure, but the pre-injury Tre White was.  Tre White is not young, but he's younger than Douglas, and Douglas looked like he was pretty much spent last season.  It wasn't due to injury.  He just looked old.   He's not going to be any better this season, but Tre White might be.

It's a small sample size but the difference between Tre's performance with the Rams vs with the Ravens is like night and day.
