Amazingly, it was the first psychedelic substance I ever tried.

In high school, before it was even a trendy South American healing retreat destination, back when it felt like it was only known to Terrence McKenna fans and frequenters of erowid.org.....I happened to know a guy who brewed it. He brought it to my house in a red solo cup with foil over the top of it. It tasted like sludgy vinegar death.

Suffice to say my 17 year old brain was NOT prepared for what hit me.

Lol.  Erowid.org.  I spent way too much time on that site as a late teen reading about experiences and then trying to recreate them. 😄

Would highly recommend the book, How To Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan for anyone remotely curious about psychedelics and their recent resurgence.

I am in the "You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend but I'll never smoke weed with Willie again" crowd... just dont like the loss of control and paranoia that comes with that stuff... I get why people like it but it doesnt work for me... I would be one of those paranoid heart palpitating bad trip dudes...

I've never done hallucinogenics but smoked weed on and off since school. It hits everyone differently. Some people get paranoid, some laugh at everything, in my case it fostered creativity. I've come up with various ideas and solutions to problems while high.

I read that book when I was 12 and it scared the holy hell out of me.

It was actually a fictional hoax written by a young Mormon woman.

Same. I smoked every day for 15 years. Loved it. Made me laugh, feel joy, feel creative, enjoy food more, etc, etc.

Then one day around the time I turned 30, a switch flipped. It started making me feel paranoid, anxious, self-loathing, etc.  It stopped being enjoyable.

I tried every strain, strength, terpene, etc, and none of it made a difference. The substance simply stopped being my ally.

Nowadays, all I can tolerate is CBD (the real, good quality stuff, not the nonsense you see at the checkout counter at 7/11) and occasionally very low THC cannabis. Anything else does not feel nice.

Same I actually will take CBD sometimes at night or like a 1/4 dose gummy and I am ok.

I will just say that, from my perspective, the language you're using to describe ayahausca ("drugs that make you violently ill", "supposed therapeutic aspects of ayahuasca are significantly played up by people who don't want to feel stupid") is quite dismissive of the substance without acknowledging its centuries of use, sacred status among indigenous peoples, well-demonstrated therapeutic benefits, and the fact that its primary psychoactive component -- DMT -- exists naturally within the brain anyway. Your words are also quite dismissive of the MANY people who have derived benefit from taking it.

Alas, its your prerogative to feel about it however you want. Just as its the prerogative of thousands of Americans to attempt to improve themselves mentally, emotionally, or spiritually by utilizing a powerful psychoactive substance with centuries of history behind it.

Well said.

I once had a bad high where I was paranoid and thought I was peeing my pants all night.  I was freaking out that people were going to make fun of me so I kept going to the bathroom to clean up....dry each time.  It was crazy lol....I really did think I was peeing my pants.

Wait until you reach my age...same feeling without any drugs. 😁

SOOOOOOO.... how about that draft? Am I right? I miss football ....

The draft can/will have the same affect on this board than the best/worst narcotic in the world.

The draft results will certainly be mood altering!

Bro same, except I was positive I'd sharted.  Mustve checked 1,000xs, each time being sure--unlike the last check that I surely did this time.... probably wiped my balloon knot raw LOL.  Looking back it was likely sweat + heightened sense of feel.  One of the best nights ever, fun as all heck, but came out the other side with a truly different perspective too.

No. If ever take a trip to South America, I'm going to enjoy myself and have fun, not puke and sh*t my brains out in some hut in the middle of nowhere while having the worst trip imaginable.

I get its  easy to make fun of... its probably overkill for a lot of people who go do this; but to dismiss it and ignore the results its had on brutal  cases of PTSD (usually soldiers) is foolish.  We're talking about hard ass men who've been in the front lines of Vietnam, and have had 40-50 years of being unable to even sleep with the lights off. Go to fireworks with their grandkids....

Can't have a nights sleep without experiencing their best friend(s) being blown to pieces, with the exact same intensity, as the first time it happened.  NIGHTLY. A very literal  and inescapable hell on earth.... and after 365/year for 40+ years of this, sometimes come out the other side after a single trip, finally at peace and able to rest at night.

You know how man has escaped that kind of hell, for 100's of years? Putting a round through their frontal lobe.  Imagine living life that way.  Now imagine being the wife, son, or parent of that person, unable to do anything for the person you love the most.  Picture who you love most, and imagine watching them go through this.  An absolute gift from God and textbook use of the word 'miracle'.  To dismiss a gift like that for other people would be an evil on par with war.

I've lived through both recent swings of the marijuana pendulum. From the late 80s when it was Reefer Madness 2 and going to make you put your baby in the microwave, to the 2000s when it was touted as an herbal pain relief remedy and possible cancer cure.
