Played a ton of Euchre in high school and college when I lived in the Buffalo area.

Then when I moved to the Syracuse area no one had ever heard of it. It is all Pitch around here.

Used to play on yahoo a lot when they still had live games and it seemed like most of the people I would meet on there were from WNY, Ohio, or Canada so if definitely seems somewhat regional.

My Dad taught me when I was young and friends and I played a lot back in the late 70's early 80's. Then I found a place to play online with random people, seemed that most of them were US and Canadian from around the Great Lakes, I need to find that site again, fun card game.

I’ve been playing most of my life. Learn the game for my grandfather when I was eight years old. My wife also plays.

However, we rarely run into any other couples that play, so we mainly play online on the euchre app.

Which app?

I learned euchre at Ohio State. We have friends here in Buffalo we play with. Grew up in Cleveland and moved back after about 10 years post college. If anyone there knew how to play it was probably because they went to Ohio State. Growing up I learned a lot of card games, but not euchre.

You can play alone with a computer partner or online against other players.

I use Euchre from karma games. same - computer or live human players. I may check out 3D. thx

While transcripts would say I majored in Chemistry/Secondary Ed at Fredonia, I think I actually earned a Doctorate in Euchre we played so much. All day, every day at the house, and every week at the Euchre tournament at Muldoon's. Ton of fun and ***** talking.

I play on Euchre 3D now as well.

Years ago, 'Waldo' was a fellow who worked in the sheet metal department, and was often a participant at the afternoon break euchre game.  The only thing was he would hem and haw about ordering up his partner's hand, to the extent everyone knew he didn't have the stones to order.  That boy never would have lasted in the Canadian version of the game.  P.T. was a veteran Lancaster Moose player, and if you didn't immediately pass or order, you were deemed as cross boarding.

Pinochle is a game that seems to demand that players pay attention.  Euchre is a game that is loose enough that quite often by the third trick, someone is asking "what's trump, again?!"

The amount of times this gets asked in the games my wife and I play with our fellow euchre loving couple is beyond count. We tend to play while imbibing an adult beverage or two and otherwise being social, so strict and unwavering recollection of trump -- let alone strategically keeping mental track of what cards other players likely have in their hands based on those played already -- tends to go out the window.

My family plays all the time, and my friends in HS and I used to gamble on it. People were so shady though, stacking the deck, dealing with shady number amounts on the deal, but you learn real quick!

I moved to middle TN and hardly anyone knows how to play. Except the people that have moved down here from Michigan. At a poker night I asked if anyone know how to play and the two guys from Michigan got super excited as did I. They all seem to know, I think it is a great lakes area type thing (but seems to miss Ohio for whatever reason).

I went to Fredonia and only the people I went to HS with in Rochester seemed to know! They must have stopped the Euchre tourney at Muldoons as I would have been all over it!

I have a friend who asks this literally every hand!

And yes we were drinking and smoking so I dont think it was that, just pay attention haha

But yeah playing casual vs gambling on it, two totally different mind sets. Though I cant help but catch people that renig, my brain wont shut that off.

My Rochester family plays a ton of euchre, so I basically grew up playing it.  Played a bunch in high school during lunch & free periods, but otherwise it's mostly at family get-togethers.  I find it's an extremely regional game - most people haven't heard of it.  I have met a couple of folks through work who know it (they're from the Midwest; one from Michigan and the other I don't recall), but they have a truly bananas scoring system that uses the 3s and 4s.  Certain point values required you to angle the top card diagonally!  I shudder just thinking about it.

My grandfather had a great story about him and his normal partner playing for money against some frenemies.  Frenemy 1 was sure Grandpa was cheating, and obsessively implemented a 2-point penalty on knocking the table.  (Grandpa and his partner were indeed cheating, but knocks had nothing to do with it.)  Grandpa eventually won when Frenemy 1 (drunk) knocked without thinking, and the 2-point penalty was enough to end the game.  The penalty/win was accepted, but it came with a free punch in the face for my grandfather.

I try to pre-empt these by announcing what's trump (and maybe who called it, and sometimes what's led, and sometimes who's turn it is) every time there's a lull in conversation.  It's very effective!  And usually by the 2nd or 3rd game, I'm distracted enough to need my own reminders.

Though seriously knowing how your partner plays or her / his tendencies is huge. Great cards and a misaligned partner = ***** up
