wasn’t the “dead puck era” the early 90’s up until the 2004-2005 lockout?

Yup.  Ovechkin benefited from not playing in that era.  However, even after the lockout the average goals per game were still lower compared to Gretzky's prime years in the 80's.  I'd argue he was the better goal scorer.  Gretzky's 1,963 assists and 2,857 total points will pry never be eclipsed though unless they teach Josh Allen how to skate.

Who is going to be Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 wins in a Major tournament? Tiger has 15, and I think Tiger is just about done. Maybe Scottie Scheffler can do it?

You're right, I stand corrected- for some reason I thought it was post 2003 lockout for a few years , but it was post 94-95 lockout

nice record, but Gretzky has no peer, and its not even close

Gretzky has more assists (1963) then the next closest player has points (Jagr 1921 pts - 766g-1155 a).

Ovi actually beat Gretzky in goals in the same number of games (1487 games), but trails the Great One by 1190 assists.  Only Messier (1193) and Francis (1249) have more assists in their careers than the gap between Gretzky and Ovi.

One NFL record that probably won't be broken is OJ's yards per game (143.1) in the 1973 season.  What about Brady's 7 Super Bowl wins?

As a hockey fan just like football today’s game is different than 80-90s hockey. Gretzky was a setup man and scored with ease but goalies were not as good and pads were much smaller. As Gretzky was protected more than Tom Brady and Mahomes combined. He was probably the best all around offensive player. No one will touch Gretzky for total points or assists, the league is different now, faster, stronger and goalies much better. He is the GOAT for hockey.

Ovi is top 5 in career hits in the History of the league, the wear and tear that puts on your body is insane. I played through college and I know my body was already falling apart from shoulders, back and head injuries.

Everyone knows exactly where Ovi will setup but 500+ times they can’t stop him from scoring from that circle. He is a dedicated goal scorer and team leader.

Hockey guy here and there is no need to put down the goal record achieved by Ovechkin. Gretzky was great, but not flawless. I've always been a fan of Bobby Orr and would want him on my team first because of his all-around play.

Gretzky was not flawless….um, okay?

That said, Orr is the only player in the argument with Gretzky for who’s the greatest.

I live in the DC area, and Ovi scored a ton by burying a bunch of one timers from the top of the circle on the power play.. like hundreds of goals this way.. a little like Cook scoring a pile of TDs from inside the 10, makes the total TD count kind of misleading

The Great One is hundreds of points ahead of anyone else.. total team player.   multiple Stanley Cups , etc etc.

Ovi is kind of like a Randy Moss or Jerry Rice, amazing ability to score a ton but ....

So, would Buddy Ryan say: “All he does is score goals”?

Or Cy Young's 749 complete games (the current active leader, Justin Verlander, has just 26)m

.

Considering that the complete game is almost extinct , I’d put money on that.

Scoring in the NBA has increased but I can’t see anyone scoring 50 points a game in a season like Wilt did.  Not sure if we’re going for just career totals in this thread.

Few, if anyone, thought Babe Ruth’s HR total would be broken but it was.  Then, the same with Aaron’s total.

The way pitchers are used these days, Cy Young’s 511 wins would be hard to break.

when Aaron beat Ruth's record it captivated the nation.  Ovi's record caused mostly a yawn.  NHL is near dead in the public's eye.  Kind of sad, but that league ruined itself.

And Gretzky played against a league full of goalies resembling a bag of meatloaf.  GTFOH with that nonsense.  Ovi played against the greatest goalies that ever lived and was great.  Gretzky is the great one, but that takedown of what Ovi just did in order to boost him up is absolutely ridiculous.

Mario Lemieux is very very much in that conversation

I believe three people transcend their sport; they are more than the "Goats"; they are cultural icons:

  • Wayne Gretzky
  • Michael Jordon
  • Babe Ruth

People from all walks of life know these three. Their participation elevated their sport. There are innumerable great athletes with phenomenal accomplishments, but the people above were known far beyond the court/field.

Who else might you nominate for this Transendence category? Brady, Tiger Woods, Richars Petty, Michael Phelps, ? ? ?

I think it goes without saying that Ovi breaking the goal record doesn't take away from Gretzky's greatness.   That said, it's not like he surpassed the record playing 1,000 more games with a ton of empty net goals.   He broke the record in a comparable number of games.   Goals are goals.    The most impressive thing about Gretzky is he would still have the all time points lead by quite a bit without scoring a goal.

I dont think you need to crap on Ovi, Moss or Rice to make your point about Gretzky.   Not for nothing Jerry Rice has every career receiving record there is, so I wouldn't just lump him in with guys who had "an amazing ability to score."

Isles fan here. I always wondered what Mike Bossy's numbers would have looked like if his career wasn't cut short by a bad back. He scored 50 or more goals in his first nine seasons including 60 or more in four of them. He scored 573 goals in just 10 seasons. His 10th season he missed time with a bad back and still managed 38 goals that year. If he could have been healthy and played as long as Wayne and Ovi, I wonder how close he could have gotten to 894/895.

Why not a Sabres fan?? It has to be the Sabres if you like the Bills, right? I never understood this. Someone else here said he was a fan of the Bruins, our most hated rival fan. What?

Born on LI. I should be a Jets fan if I followed my dad when it came to football. My dad bought seasons to the Jets in Namath's rookie year. He started taking me to the games in the early 70's. I became a Bills fan because of OJ. I have no ties to WNY at all. For me it's the Bills, Islanders and Yankees.

And Sabres drafted Ric Seiling and his 88 career goals one pick before Bossy. Nice......

Nice...I see now. I like the Yankees too.

Someone posted a poll here a few weeks ago where you couldn't reply giving three options:

a. born in WNY and still live there

b. grew up in WNY and moved out

c. grew up elsewhere and moved to WNY

You would be in a fourth option: neither grew up in nor moved to WNY.

In many countries Tyson is household name for boxing. Ali is legend. But Tyson is more popular.

In Russia if smb likes to fight he can be called Tyson.

If smb drives very quickly , he will be called Shumaher. Michael Shumaher is icon of Formula 1
