And in a case like Cook's, an extension would be part of the deal, which would have to be worked out well before the trade.  Doesnt happen often. Definitely isnt happening with Cook. It would happen before the draft if it did. Quote

They were already both on their 2nd contracts and had gotten their paydays a couple times over.  Cook's camp would almost certainly use the trade to leverage a new deal immediately. If there is a chance he holds out on the Bills, it's almost guaranteed he'd do that to whatever new team is trading for him. Yes, Cooper and Douglas' situations were different. Cook's situation is also unique.  I don't think it is almost a guarantee that Cook would hold out on a new team. Part of the problem Cook could see with the Bills is his usage will remain the same. If a new team says they will use him as a 3 down, bellcow type RB both parties could be happy.  Even without a new contract if Cook can come off another improved season - this time showing 3 down bellcow work - he would have positioned himself into the $12M - $15M big money contract range as he goes to FA. Another year doing what he does with the Bills doesn't move him out of the $9M range. Someone like Cook, or a player who hasn’t worked out well here (Elam was another example in previous years).  When was the last time this was done? I can’t find any recent examples of a player being part of a draft-day trade, though I’m no search expert on this. I can recall one involving Jerome Bettis, but that was decades ago, I believe.  Anybody know of any recent examples? Not that it can’t happen, but it seems like it’s become so extremely rare that I wouldn’t even bother to consider the possibility, especially on Day 1.   Reading some of the reply's here specifically about the resigning of our center McGovern, which I hope it doesn't happen ! SVPG could be that guy, but I would think Beane and Kromer especially would want him to be a part of the team going forward .  But there are teams out there in need of a very good young center and might want him in a trade, that being said after trading Wyatt Teller to the Browns only to see him become a pro bowl talent one would hope that a lesson was learned from that and that those here wouldn't pull a Giant type mistake again ...
