This makes absolutely no sense for NE.  Why do this?  So Josh Dobbs can be your backup?  Did Milton and Maye not get along?

I think it's a pretty solid move by New England, they already got their QB in Maye so no need for a developmental QB. They then drafted Milton in the 6th round and flipped him for a 5th which is solid value imo considering Milton is most likely never going to be much more than a backup at the NFL level or at his cieling maybe a low level QB 1.

They sent a 7th back. Pats fans were expecting a 2nd 😆.. essentially they traded him for about where they had him. I think it’s pretty clear not enough room in the QB room for two big egos.

I think it's a terrible move by the Pats.

Let's also comment that they are acting like Maye had a legendary season, when he was only marginally above Trent Edwards or JP Losman first year starting kind of seasons.

Granted, he showed a lot of promise....but for that measure of compensation might have been worth keeping Milton around another season.

They didn’t flip Milton for a fifth.  They moved up 43 draft slots, from the seventh round to the back end of the fifth. That’s zilch…

Plus Milton was a 6th rounder himself. They basically got rid of him. Strange move.

Rob Johnson got Jacksonville a 1st rounder for doing the same thing in preseason.

Not true. He had great game in season opener. The hilarious thing was that he was injured during the game and didn’t finish it. Harbinger of the things to come!!

Probably been argued already, but one explanation is that the Patriots are committed to devoting all resources to fostering Maye's success, and his development would be best complimented by the presence of a brainy vet backup (Dobbs) in the room over a talented but raw prospect (Milton). Roster management dictates that you get some value for Milton now (with that shiny, fool's gold week 18 film), and redirect all those offseason snaps and resources directly into Drake Maye. Hedging with a 3rd (developmental) QB on the 53 is not optimal.

If Josh ever got hurt, I would feel more confident with Milton for a three or four-game stretch than Trubisky or Kyle Allen or Matt Barkley.

Buuuuuuut how would you feel about Mike White? Eh?

(Agreed on Trubisky; he's AWFUL. Way too hesitant.)

I wrestle in my endless mock simulations with drafting a high floor rookie backup like McCord (or Shough when he inexplicably falls) to replace both Trubisky and White at a nice cap savings. But there is that question of what Allen loses in weekly preparation, film study, etc., without those more experienced eyes and voices in the room. Where the over-the-hill PS vet could be the move...

Great move for New England. Anyone else in this thread saying otherwise is hilariously wrong.

Exactly. Anyone that knows anything about football could tell you that New England getting an extra 5th round pick in the draft this year pretty much screws the rest of the AFC over for the next decade.

Milton has zero chance of starting in Dallas

Why? Isn't the goal of every NFL team to win the Super Bowl?

Dak Prescott cannot beat good teams. good defenses, and has shown the latter over and over and over and over and...

Jerry Jones looks to be be well over 100 years old.  If Milton looks the way he looks against the Bills consistently in camp and in the pre-season, I believe it is possible the he starts the season.

Jones is very old, a very poor GM, and a publicity and attention seeking narcissist.  He wants the attention a Super Bowl will bring him, one more time. If Milton somehow does what I say above, why wouldn't Milton start? Jones, like most of us, likely knows that Dak is incapable of winning a championship or even contending for one.

I think some desperate team without a QB would be willing to pay @ 1/2 of Prescott's salary, the girls paying the other half. Or, Dak backs up Milton.

A long shot, but not if Dak looks like Dak and Milton's performance against the Bills was indicative of what kind of NFL player he will be.

Maye’s development isn’t going to hinge on who his backup is…

Without looking at data, I would guess that the vast majority of teams with a young, potentially franchise level quarterback, would opt for a steady veteran hand behind him who is a willing teacher, rather than another raw rook, regardless of said raw rooks potential.  Milton had to go if he wanted to advance his career.  It could be argued that NE should’ve held out for more of a return, bout I don’t think that Milton’s performance against an unmotivated Bills defense filled with backups moved the needle that much.

Some fans around here think James Cook is worth a 2nd too and they're just as wrong.

If someone offered a 2nd for Cook, I’d personally pack his bags and drive him to the airport

I dunno, I feel like this is a nothing burger... I think if Milton is starting for you on that team you have a problem...  I dont think Vrabel wants that either, I think he prefers a pocket passer.

I'm a bit concerned with all the picks the pats are accumulating.

First round: No. 4

Second round: No. 38

Third round: No. 69

Third round: No. 77 (From Atlanta)

Fourth round: No. 106

Fifth round: No. 144

Fifth round: No. 171 (From Dallas)

Seventh round: No. 220

Seventh round: No. 238 (From Los Angeles Chargers)

They could make a strong push for the division

To be fair, it was one preseason game and one regular season game (not against scrubs) for Rob Johnson. In 1997 Mark Brunell (QB of the Jags) injured his knee in the 2nd preseason game. Rob Johnson was the starter for the third preseason game. Couldn't find any stats for the 4th pre-season game, but assume he didn't play (cause back then only 3rd-5th stringers usually played the 4th preseason game). Johnson would then go on to start the first game of the year for the Jags---Week 1 of the regular season vs. the Baltimore Ravens (as Brunell was still recovering). It wasn't a very good Baltimore team (they would finish 6-9-1 with Vinny Testeverde as their QB), but it was their starting line-up, on opening day, in Baltimore.

Rob Johnson's stats for those two games in 1997 (before becoming a Bill in 1998):

Preseason week 3 vs. 49ers: 22 of 29 for 241 yards, 1 TD (passing), 0 INTs, 16 Rushing yards, 1 TD (rushing)---in a 28-20 Jax win (albeit preseason). [SF did go 13-3 that year, but not sure how they managed this preseason game, i.e., how many starters played and for how long, etc.]

Regular season week 1 vs. Ravens: 20 of 24 for 294 yards, 2 TDs (passing), 0 INTs, 31 Rushing yards, 1 TD (rushing)---and a 28-27 Jax win.

But, your point of possible fool's gold (with Milton, in relation to Johnson) still stands.

And interesting to note, Johnson only saw 13 more snaps total the rest of that year (1997).

He went: 2 for 4 for 50 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, 3 sacks, 3 Rushing yards (on 9 attempts), 0 TDs

[Not quite so pretty, but I guess it was tough to knock a guy for those stats too much when it was across 4 games---basically coming in and playing 2-5 snaps in each of those games.}

When the trade was 1st announced, I looked at his stats & started a thread titled "Rob Johnson, the sacked man." Unfortunately, I bought into the hype from Wade & was optimistic about him. I even was on the Johnson side of Flutie v Johnson.

It turned out my 1st impression was the correct one.
