Will the tariffs make America wealthy again? Will they send us into a depression?

Beats me.

I do know however that I'm not listening to the opinions of morons who peddled this crap for four years.

Did trade end today?

Imagine a world where the US has the ability to choose the type of jobs our citizens have to work, focusing on safety and higher wage opportunity’s for the betterment of society. Sure, it doesn’t mean we can make everything we buy, but is doing so really in our best interest?

Don’t we have the right as the most wealthy nation in the world to not have to ask our citizens to work on assembly lines and clothing factories for minimum wage? Why not let other countries compete over that work? We can’t do it as cheap and if we try the best result is our citizens taking on the extra expense. In the best case scenario we can have a diverse group of suppliers from all over the world competing to sell us goods at the best rates. Then our citizens can be free to consume and purchase the things they want at the best possible prices. It almost sounds like utopia doesn’t it?

We only get the good high quality jobs we want. Then we get the best possible prices on everything we want to buy. It’s just too good to be true right?

Where are the blue state Ds lining up to cut taxes and deregulate their states.

Oppose Trump Tariffs to their logical conclusion.  Don’t your taxes, minimum wage requirements, and regulations increase our costs?

Or is this just all faux outrage - not tied to any consistent view of free trade.

Of which the U.S. has been taken advantage of for years.

Orange man bad so tariff bad!

Blind contrarianism is not a political ideology, it’s a toddler folding its arms and saying “no” to bedtime.

Don’t be upset pnut. It’s just a fun way of showing how wrong you frequently are. It happens to people that are outraged and emotional 24/7.

Economic think tank? Where did you come up with that?

You should. The problem comes when you are outraged about things like flag code and the like. It leads you to throwing up on yourself far too often.

Economic think tank? I know where you got that one. Your ass.

No that’s not a « good thread ».  Those calculations are off. Those aren’t in fact the tariffs that the « offending » countries are applying on us exports.

I thought the same thing.  But I've been unable to find a report that refutes the number.  I did read that the tariff on dairy products was grossly misrepresented by trump.  we've never met the "small milk carton" threshold that he lied about and therefore never paid the tariff.  we've generally imported less than 1/2 the quota.  So, I strongly suspect he's lying about these numbers as well....

I'll take JP Morgan's analysis over trump's lies

https://www.jpmorgan.com/insights/global-research/current-events/us-tariffs

"Largest tax increase since 1968"

In response to the auto tariff announcements, J.P. Morgan Research has further revised its growth and inflation forecasts. It now sees a 0.2 percentage point hit to U.S. GDP, which moves its estimate for the year down to 1.3%. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price inflation for 2025 is expected to climb to 2.7%, up 0.2 percentage points, while core PCE inflation is forecast to increase 0.3 percentage points to 3.1%.

“The worsening growth and inflation outcomes leave the Fed with a challenging dilemma. Absent labor market deterioration, there is a strong case for rates to be on hold indefinitely. However, the more challenging business environment increases the chances of just such a labor market deterioration,” said Michael Feroli, chief U.S. economist at J.P. Morgan. “We hold our call for cuts in June and September and will revisit after next week’s jobs report.”
