There used to be quite a few here (when NC was DR) but I think they went to the other board. they're clutching their copies of "Atlas Shrugged" nervously. But happy to have them on our side for the issue of tariffs. I agree. How a libertarian could become a Trumpie is beyond me. I assume it is all a strategic ploy. Peter Thiel and his protege JD Vance needed someone intellectually weak (Trump) in power, someone they could dazzle and control to ultimately get to their Benevolent King model of governance and a libertarian paradise. Elon hopped on right away. You know they hate tariffs privately but probably believe this is all working to destroy the current world order, leaving it open for their Benevolent Fascist to ascend. I'm not making this up. It is Curtis Yarvin and his ilk, who have become weirdly close to this whole set. They're running Trump, and he's too dumb and narcissistic to realize it. Or he doesn't care since all he's ever wanted are the trappings of power. 4 minutes ago, Mikie2times said: We will use taxes to subsidize employment in less skilled and uneducated jobs. Ironically, sounds a bit like something Bernie would do. Yep. Republicans are the new socialists. 1

That's what makes it a cult rather than a political movement. The only good thing is it dies with his presidency, which is why he's trying to hang on for an unconstitutional third term. And that's why it's unfair to Milei and Argentina to compare their bad hair guy to our's. Milei has a coherent economic philosophy to go with his more authoritarian impulses to enact that philosophy by any means necessary. He's always hated tariffs, as they are anathema to freedom. https://www.cato.org/blog/milei-free-trade

Yes, we are classical liberals, today's libertarians. Tariffs are, at their core, an affront to freedom. Anti-tariff = pro-freedom. Period. So other countries that have had tariffs on our goods for decades should drop those tariffs right? Like canadas 200-300 percent tariff on dairy products?

Doubling your money in 5 years is a pretty nice return.

Yeah! Let's be more like the PRC!! That's the America I always dreamed of.

Nike is going to come to the US, it's employees with join the teamsters. They will be paying 20x the labor costs. Costs will be passed to consumers. Sum of all costs past to consumers will be greater than income of jobs created.

But seems our resident old kook holds China as the bar he wants us to hit.
The Frankish Reich Posted April 5 Posted April 5 And there you have it in one tweet: the difference between a true anti-communist (Reagan) and a fake one (Trump). Reagan viewed the USSR and the PRC as oppressive societies stifling human freedom. Our goal was to eliminate those systems - through economic force, a strong defense presence, and the power of our democratic-capitalist system. It was to free China and the USSR by winning the battle of ideologies because, after all, he believed our system was the best the world ever created. Trump? He thinks to beat China we need to become China. Because, after all, our system is not the best; China's is. 2
Joe Ferguson forever Posted April 5 Posted April 5 14 minutes ago, aristocrat said: Like canadas 200-300 percent tariff on dairy products? don't believe a thing orange pig says. The opposite is generally true. from the CBC: During his speech, Trump also claimed Canada imposes a "250 to 300 per cent tariff on many of our dairy products. They do the first can of milk, the first carton of milk at a very low price but after that it gets bad." "Take a look at what happens down the road when you look a little bit, it's not a pretty picture," Trump added. "And it's not fair. It's not fair to our farmers, it's not fair to our country." His claim is not entirely true. Those high tariffs on U.S. dairy only apply if exports exceed set quotas. Below the quotas, the U.S. dairy products enter tariff-free because of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. US imports have never exceeded the quota so ZERO tariffs have been paid by US farmers on dairy products!!!
