McDermott plays rookies when they are good.

Yup.

There is no rookie that played on the Bills since 2018 and I was ever like "wow this guy should be on the field more." Maybe Josh but they were trying to protect him.

The ones who are ready, play. Rousseau, Ed, Tre etc all played a ton out of the box. Milano took some seasoning. So did Bernard. Guys like Elam, Bishop etc etc all didn't play a lot and when they did play, they were pretty bad.

Cook is being way undervalued. If anybody deserves an extension or a least a bump in pay its Cook. He was our biggest weapons on offense outside of Josh.

They were trying to give him one

Then don't be an ass on Social media and come with unrealistic demands.

They've never needed this level of rookie contribution since becoming a playoff team and it's a direct result of being as cap-challenged last off-season.  And that's happened because Josh has to get paid and McD needs all of his defensive pieces.  Something has to give eventually.

Their top 3 picks from 2024 were made more for need than anything else.  They were weak at WR and Coleman received 60% of snaps through 8 of his first 9 weeks pre-injury.  Carter had 30% in 6 of his first 7 on that rotational DL.  And I suspect they envisioned Bishop starting until that pre-season injury.

As an aside, I noted in another thread that from the 2017-22 drafts, 22 players reached the end of their rookie contracts.  16 were re-signed (73%) with only 6 hitting UFA.  Even at slightly below-market rates, that's a lot of cap expended and especially when compared with adding UFA's.  Means you gotta get lower-cost players.

I agree. The issue is the amount he wants and the amount Beane wants to pay are two different worlds. But Cook is our best player on Offense outside of Josh. We need him back.

He says all that, meanwhile it's been reported we're having every possible type of workout and meeting with Isaiah Bond who's projected as a late 2nd rounder. Laviska Shenault is currently our #5 WR on the depth chart... So yeah I wouldn't take Beane's comments to mean they are done at the position. At least I hope he isn't sincerely resting on last year's laurels to proclaim that the passing offense doesn't need any work. That would be depressing.

Yeah Beane is definitely not done at the position.  But, what I think it more likely means is that Beane isn't entering the draft feeling like he has to go WR early.  Doesn't mean they wouldn't, which is why they are still meeting with guys expected to go in rounds 1 and 2.  If the right guy is there as his BPA when we are on the clock, I have no doubt Beane isn't afraid to pull the trigger.

I will say this though...Beane every draft season is pretty spot on in what he says coming into a draft, he does very little misdirection.  The fact he said bringing in competition is meaningful, so I think it's probably more likely not until day 3 we will see the Bills make a move at WR.  I could easily see us take one in the 4th, or maybe if they haven't already traded up with any of their first 3 picks, they could use some of that extra ammo in rounds 4, 5, and 6 to go get a guy in the 3rd.  And this fits Beane's history too where he has guys slated to start and then brings in a mid round guy to develop and for competition (Davis in 4th when we had Diggs and Brown...Shakir in 5th when we signed Crowder for the slot and resigned McKenzie too).  Davis and Shakir were drafted as guys to compete and hopefully develop into future starters, which they both did.

And a guy I like for us a lot is the one we previously discussed, and that is Thornton maybe as early as the 4th...a guy who brings potential and competition, but more importantly, brings a skill set we lack which is a big vertical threat.

Dont get me wrong, I am not against a WR in our first 3 picks in rounds 1 and 2...I am only talking to what I more expect to happen.

I would prefer to keep Cook...but Cook and his agent are way overvaluing him.  He wants to be paid $15M a year, behind only Saquan and EMC, 2 guys whose league he is not in.  But more importantly, Cook is a 2 down RB who becomes a liability on 3rd down because he isn't great at pass pro, which is why a journeyman RB in Ty Johnson has taken over as our 3rd down back.  Not to mention, Cook is an unreliable pass catcher, another thing Ty does better than him.

And being quite blunt...put Cook on another team where he doesn't have Josh Allen and an elite OL blocking from him, and I don't think he has nearly the same kind of success he has had here.

Again...I do like Cook, but IMHO he isn't in the same league as the guys he wants to be paid like, so I don't think we should over pay him to keep him.  And with his OL and Josh Allen, we don't need to a high priced RB for this offense to be elite.

Is it Cook or the OL /System?  We may need to let Davis eat full time for a few games to find out.

Really? The Davis test last season when he couldn't find an inch wasn't enough for you? It was for McD and rest of us... Yes, the line is good. But Cook is a stud. ANY NFL team would kill to have him.

Good, trade him.
