When you referred to Governor Abbott as "Hot Wheels," I didn't need an explanation about your intent. Why? I regularly see similar remarks, usually from people who identify as Democrats, targeted at me. The mockery tends to focus on my deafness or my challenges with language. I understand why you're walking back your comment now. But I'd respectfully suggest that the original statement may have resonated more deeply with your constituents than the apology did- because many of them already use language like that toward people like me. Don't be afraid to own the original "Governor Hot Wheels" comment. You echoed your own base when you said it, and you know it.
