Cap Space - Pre-Draft

Spotrac finally has all the contracts on the books.

OTC still has 5 not on the books so their numbers are not valid yet.

Spotrac has the Bills -$497K.

No doubt the Bills are under the cap, but just barely.

There are no new restructures announced.

 

Beane no doubt will restructure someone.  Most likely it will be Dawkins.

That cap savings would be enough to sign rookies, PS, a few lower end FAs and have a few bucks for the season.

When you are paying a Superstar QB at the Superstar QB rate, you will always be close to the cap.

 

For all the grief he gets, Beane has done a reasonable job with the cap space available to him....of course Josh Allen makes his job a lot easier because he can mask many of the deficiencies on the team.

 

No GM bats a thousand, but more times than not Beane finds a way to improve the team and keep it competitive.......hitting on pick 30, 56, and 62 this year will go a long way to getting this team over the hump.

 

Here's to hoping he can make it happen!!

I’m so glad Josh didn’t try to squeeze every last penny out of the team. This could be a whole lot worse if we had a greedy A-hole QB.

This is a good time to remind people that though SPOTRAC does an excellent job at keeping up to date, they are just saying what the contracts currently reflect. This number and the number the players union (which is normally closer to official number) are often off a bit 

 

Furthermore, Beane has a completely different number on his desk that reflects what he actually has to work with. He's talked about it before. I believe it's basically a chart with what moves still can be made of a move presents itself that makes sense. They can still make some moves.

He can.  Like i said he can get about $8M for restructuring Dawkins but after that it gets problematic.

The next players to get cap from are:

 

Knox - Doubt extremely Beane pushes more money into next year.

DQ Jones - Last year.   A Post June 1 cut does save $5.5M

Samuel - Not sure you want to push back money on him.

Epenesa - Same as above.

McGovern - If he was re-signed also gets some cap relief.

T. Johnson - He can get you about $3M.

 

Players after those do not net you much cap at all.

I see that your are checking Sportrac as often as I do

 

Ty Johnson - originally reported as $5M/2, in fact $4/2 with some incentives. Can be cut next year with almost no dead cap. Great deal.

 

Gilliam - same deal as Hamlin, and one thing I don't get. They say it is $2M guaranteed and he gets $2M in cash, but cap hit is $1,3M. Anybody knows how is this possible?

 

Dane - wow he signed basically (or maybe even literally) for vet min.

I was just looking at the Gilliam deal.  I think it might be like Hamlin's 4YQC (4-Year Qualifying Contract).

They got the same numbers.

 

I agree about the Dane Jackson contract.  He gets some signing bonus and guarantee but it sure is lower than I thought it would be.

 

I've noticed that sometimes both Spotrac and OTC do some corrections as they get the info in.  We may still see some of that.

The big difference I've seen between the 2 is Josh Allen cap hit.  Spotrac is adding $1.5M on LTBE incentive which they don't specify and 

OTC doesn't.

Yup. And with some deals they are done and not yet submitted to the league office yet either. 

 

For example, they may have already agreed to a pay cut with Samuel and are waiting to make it official.  Beane tends to like to move up to the cap and then announce these things with other moves he makes so it doesn't look like he's flush with cash.

If Samuel doesn't produce Beane can get out of his contract very easily next March.  I don't see him asking for a pay cut.

 

Now Knox on the other hand............no way Beane pays him $12M more cash next year with a $17M cap hit.

If Knox wants to stay for 2 more years, he has to give up something this year.  If he doesn't, He's as good as gone in 2026.

Yea we know Spotrac and Beane were $6m apart at the Combine. Spotrac at that stage was projecting the Bills $10m over the cap and Beane was asked about it in his presser and said "right now we are about $4m". You can speculate why that difference was, but I think it is fair to say they were working on slightly different assumptions.
