Ok I’m going to walk back my angst on this after watching the presser. First, Beane basically said they have been after Hoecht for awhile, watching him as an RFA last year. So it sounded like they didn’t really care about the PED deal becuase they wanted him that bad. Essentially he knew, but didn’t care.

On Larry, the idea that he told Beane as soon as he found out shows some level of honesty and character for a guy who has never been involved in anything bad before. He didn’t have to say anything and he did knowing Beane could walk away. Beane and Larry O would have had no idea this was coming. Beane said in hindsight he probably would not have made the move to have two suspended guys, but by the time they found out, free agency at the position had dried up. Sounds like they could have walked away from the deal but if they did there weren’t any alternatives.

So as a resident Beane hater, I’ll admit I don’t knock him for how he handled this situation.

This is a refreshing post and take...kudos to you, not enough of this happens around here.  Setting your feelings about something aside to look at this on its own in a rational, unbiased, and fair light is a rare commodity on this board.

Does anyone have a link to Beane presser about this

7:20 to around 14:50 of this video is where he talks about the situations of Hoecht and Larry O.

as to where in the video @H2o posted, I couldn’t tell you.

Has there been an update on Ogunjobi’s contract? Beane said there were some things with his contract to work through?

Maybe we were able to cut the cap hit in half? I’m hoping.

would make this a lot less annoying

Shame on Beane for getting played by Okinjobi’s agent. Just what we need a one year, expensive 11 game PED user. The other guy he claims he knew about, he signed anyway. Maybe they’ll work out but there had to be better options.

Very disheartening. Only upside is fresher legs for the middle stretch of the season?

Unless they schedule KC, Cincy,  Baltimore Philly four out of the first 6 games. Now that would be Billsy....

That's a good summary.  Regarding Hoecht, they were in for him long term, even knowing the details of the suspension.  Beane was not 'clueless' regarding it - he accepted it and the consequence of the 6 games he would miss to sign the player.  And since Hoecht will likely play a role as a rotational 'chess piece', it's not like they are losing an every down starter for those games.

For Larry, you are talking about a depth lineman.  Once again Beane went ahead with the deal even after finding out - at the same time the player did, and even before the league did - because in terms of FA depth linemen he didn't think there was anyone else worth signing out there so he just decided to do it, and he might have even considered the cap savings based on the situation to actually be an added positive.  Esp for this player the Bills will be drafting likely multiple DTs who may be better.  Now those rookies (and other depth players) will play the first 6 games and it will be seen what they can do.  After the 6 games they may determine Larry isn't better and act accordingly.

In either case I don't think it shows Beane is stupid or clueless- they were calculated decisions (which included his assessment of the character of the players and circumstances of the suspension).   And the loss of either of these players isn't going to put us at any huge disadvantage for the first 6 games.

I think many are reacting to the headline "Bills sign two FAs who are suspended for PEDs!!!!" on a surface level of 'optics' vs  actually considering the real events and actual consequence

If they perform towards the end of the season and in the playoffs then we'll all just laugh at this and it won't be a big deal

The Hoetch signing is actually pretty intriguing and reminds me of Bryce paup in 1995.

He told him before he signed.  Beane made a choice to move forward.

The guy sounds like he really wants to be accepted by teammates and the fanbase after a crushing turn of events. He’s going to break his back for us. Maybe it’ll work out.

I'm rooting for him.  I did think it was kind of interesting it felt like he came in at 100 for PC "It's so great to be here!" - seemed to be wanting to set a real over the top positive/optimistic tone, knowing that the suspension questions were sure to come

This leaves us in a tight spot during the regular season and doesn't help our chances to get the one seed. We are now counting on rookie lineman in the draft to take up the slack?

The way I see it, better to know it’s coming now while you are still forming your roster than to get surprised later when far fewer options exist. So, there is my little ray of sunshine.

I think they knew before both signed their contracts they were missing six games?  Correct as I'm trying to catch up here.

I get the deal for Hoecht since it’s more than one year. But the Larry O deal makes no sense for one year and he is out half of it. Unless that salary is prorated and not the full $8m.

This kind of put a damper on the off season for me. Beane certainly screwed up. Hopefully, he can make up for his blunder with an outstanding draft.

Missing 6 of 20 games is way less than a half if my calculations are correct.  I'm with you on the Ogunjobi deal though even though his contract is prorated.  What's alarming is he wasn't good even on PED's.

Did you watch the press conference above? The whole thing? I think what he says makes sense, and I think some people just like to blame others.

Missing 6 regular season games. Then it takes a game or two to get their wind and legs back after sitting for so long. Beane got played, doesn't matter how long he liked a guy.
