Big crap sandwich here.   Beane had an interesting decision with Ogunjobi but he made his choice.   It sucks but the same time nothing matters as long as they make the playoffs then things matter. Understand playoffs are not a given but they can overcome missing these guys for 6 games.

Our goal should be 1 seed, not just make the playoffs.   Accepting just a playoff appearance is a setback.   Last year was supposed to be our reset year with all the departures and carrying Diggs dead cap money.  Now once again we're carrying dead weight.

this is why I said this week was miserable to me, the extensions were great and signing Hamlin was really important imo, but not signing a starting caliber corner was a big mistake imo and now they are left chasing the position.   Then throw in two players they were going to rely on up front being out six games.  It’s a bad situation.

Dude, stop choosing misery. I was HYPED for these signings so far. Superbowl smell in March! Of course the corner situation is really worrisome, and TWO suspensions at once is crazy, but you really expected Beane to solve everything in week 1 of FA? A lot of time left till September.

The dumbest part of the meltdown is we are going to draft multiple dlineman better than the two backups we signed lol

Same applies at corner

Hoecht's contract numbers already looked high to begin with. This news makes those numbers almost shocking. Just a bizarre story.

Must be because he was high as well. lol

It's posted in this thread.  Bills will save about $3M total per Cover 1 and Master Strategist's analysis.  Google is incorrect.

If this is correct, this may actually play to the Bills favor in "back-loading" the season. As with the Bosa signing, I'm not concerned with him playing every snap all year at a high level. 17 will get them to the playoffs, and at that point they will need something better than what they've been rolling with on defense.

That's not how it works.  It's a strict liability system-- you got something in there that the test picks up, you are suspended, no matter how innocuous.

Correct.  Guaranteed money is guaranteed.  But given the reported cap savings of several million dollars as a result of the suspensions, it ain't nothing.

They can appeal how many weeks they are suspended

So I’ll be optimistic that this is a blessing in disguise. One, they can’t sit back and not continue to add talent to the DL now. Draft and/or trade. Two, Carter will get his opportunity at the beginning of the season and ogunjobi can help him behind the scenes as he will be allowed to practice and be in the meetings etc. This way they will be able to develop Carter and will see what we have. Three, ogunjobi is 31 and this will keep him fresh for the home stretch and playoffs. For Hoecht he seems like a super motivated guy and I think this happening could make him an approach this season with his hair on fire even more. Four, the extra cap space.

If you’re happy that the GM got schooled, that’s on you.

I am not.

Schooled? More like caught by surprise. I don't recall anyone else bringing up potential PED issues.

I know this tiring sentiment is the growing growl here on the message board, but it lacks nuance, and frankly...truth.  Is Greg Rousseau a train wreck?  Is Ed Oliver a train wreck?  Was Leonard Floyd's tenure here a train wreck?  Was the Daquan Jones free agent signing a train wreck?  Harrison Phillips? Even the AJ Epenesa pick (end of the 2nd round with major busts all over the board before and after him) is at worst, less than a train wreck.

Are you upset he got Joey Bosa this year?  Von was injured.  That's not a train wreck.  Are you mad about the rotational guys.  The Tim Settles and Jordan Phillips of the world?

So, where are the train wrecks?  Boogie Basham.  For sure!!  Dewayne Carter? Maybe.

I fully acknowledge the line was crap last year.  So does he.  So he's doing whatever he can to fix it.  I also acknowledge that you don't just snap your fingers and it's done.  They draft near the end of the first round every year.  They have a QB who eats up a ton of the cap.  And he has to address every position on the field.  He did build a team that went to the AFC championship game last year.  And if a very good TE makes a catch that he should make, we might be talking about a parade, not an awful defensive line.

Oliver has underwhelmed.   Groot is good, but disappeared when they needed him the most against KC.  Floyd was invisible and a total non factor for much of he second half of his season here. Jones played well two years ago and was awful last year.  Defensive line has been a weakness for years.  You can't really deny that.  They haven't been the worst in the league but they have been pretty poor for those part.  Definitely played a big part in the failures of the team in the playoffs.

it’s kinda the GM’s job to know these things before they happen.

Its part of the reason they’re paid a lot of money.

Eh, more of a bad look for the team than a huge impact. It sucks and makes Beane look stupid but I’m not too concerned about the impact on the D.

We aren’t fixing that defense in a year, especially that D-line. We’ve got 2 pretty good guys (Oliver, Rousseau), 1 potential game changer in Bossa if he doesn’t stub his toe, and a bunch of jags. LB is pretty good. Jackson sets the floor at CB. Safeties are a big question mark. That’s not a SB winning defense.

There’s a lot of time between now and September. I expect Beane isn’t done yet.

Ok I’m going to walk back my angst on this after watching the presser. First, Beane basically said they have been after Hoecht for awhile, watching him as an RFA last year. So it sounded like they didn’t really care about the PED deal becuase they wanted him that bad. Essentially he knew, but didn’t care.

On Larry, the idea that he told Beane as soon as he found out shows some level of honesty and character for a guy who has never been involved in anything bad before. He didn’t have to say anything and he did knowing Beane could walk away. Beane and Larry O would have had no idea this was coming. Beane said in hindsight he probably would not have made the move to have two suspended guys, but by the time they found out, free agency at the position had dried up. Sounds like they could have walked away from the deal but if they did there weren’t any alternatives.

So as a resident Beane hater, I’ll admit I don’t knock him for how he handled this situation.

Fair point, but I don't know if it's possible to screw up this year. It's one of the deepest dline classes I've seen in a long time

But I understand your concern

I think you can add that these two pedophiles can now come under the tutelage of Bosa and these idiots can learn how to juice without getting caught.
